The first amendment of the US Constitution establishes freedom of religion, free speech, freedom of the press, and freedom of assembly. Congressional leaders all take an oath of office on day one committing to uphold the Constitution of the United States. The same can be said in regards to anyone that is elected or appointed to serve in official capacity, except the President who has a special oath that is taken. So if everyone has taken an oath to protect the Constitution, why are so many leaders out to destroy free speech?
One representative that is making a major push for eliminating free speech is Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. In tweets on Sunday, she expressed her frustration towards Facebook and other social media platforms in their refusal to remove individuals posts from their platforms.
Speech in which someone disagrees with a lifestyle or political opinion is now “unchecked toxicity.” So please take note that freedom, which means unrestricted use and without constraint, only applies when it is acceptable with liberal logic and extreme left ideas according to Democrats. Considering the amount of back and forth argument regarding the framing of the constitution and founding of our country, this is most certainly not what the framers of the constitution had in mind regarding free speech.
Since there is significant debate regarding “hate” speech and speaking ones mind about lifestyle and decisions, the question should be examined in another way. What classifies an individuals statement or opinion as “disinformation” as AOC suggests? Is it simply the “bigotry” that she speaks of where something is contrary to liberal ideas and logic? This suggestion of absolutism by AOC is completely contradictory to the ability to exercise free speech.
The assault on free speech doesn’t end with AOC either. Take into account statements by those who have taken said oath to defend the Constitution such as Hillary Clinton.
So now that someone posts a video that is attempting to be funny is “sexist trash.” If we are going to talk about trash Hillary, lets talk about the trash the left continues to spill about Donald Trump and the “hate” segments and videos that SNL produces attacking and ridiculing President Trump. Is this not a double standard that is suggested by the left? A quick search on YouTube.com or on Facebook will show you many videos where ridicule is being passed about President Trump with thousands of likes and shares. Is this not bigotry and hate speech?
There is absolutely nothing wrong with disagreement of opinion and having different viewpoints. Different viewpoints were the driving force behind establishing our Republic in the first place. In 1765 the Stamp Act was passed establishing taxation without representation and was met with stiff opposition from the colonies. The Tea Act of 1773 led to the Boston Tea Party. In response, Britain enacted the Intolerable (Coercive) Acts which lead to the initial Continental Congress and eventually the Revolutionary War and American Independence. All of the things that led to our country, where you can openly speak without fear, were brought about by differing opinions.
The concern is not the differing opinions that we are having, the concern is how we are responding to those differing opinions. Calls to censor anyone speaking out in disagreement should not be tolerated, especially in the case of someone that has sworn an oath to protect our Constitution. Any conservative has the right to express disagreement with liberal ideas, just as much as AOC and any other Democrat has a right to express their opinions. Conservative leadership must call out Democratic bigotry for exactly what it is, an assault on the First Amendment and free speech.
