New polls out of Iowa follow trends of several other recent polls which may be signaling trouble for former Vice President Biden. In the new CNN/Des Moines Register poll data, Biden leads Bernie Sanders by just 8 points. This shows a much closer race than had been previously seen in reports that had Biden with double digit leads earlier in the year.
The new poll does not just spell trouble for Biden, but also for Senator Bernie Sanders. The poll shows Sanders leads Senator Elizabeth Warren by 1 point and Mayor Pete Buttigieg by 2 points. This falls well within the margin of error for the poll which is 4%.
Several polls have found increases for Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Senator Elizabeth Warren of late. Buttigieg has been active in many high profile situations as well as having been the recipient of much media attention regarding his opinions as someone living an alternative lifestyle. Warren has garnered attention for her continuous rollouts of plans for nearly every possible position someone could have.
Real Clear Politics still has Biden showing as an overall 16.6 point favorite right now in their latest average. While Biden shows strong in the average, his general support numbers have started to decline in recent weeks as other candidates have started attacking him and his positions.
Biden has certainly not helped his cause with recent flip flops in positions such as his support of the repeal of the Hyde amendment. Biden was an outspoken opponent to repeal the amendment, but reversed his opinion this past week after pressure from those on the left. Biden was the one candidate that was in a more moderate position, but is now following other candidates in moving to the left.
This continued move to the left by Democratic candidates has caused concern for many moderate Democrats. Several Democrats like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib have all caused significant concern with their extreme left views. As seen in the below video, many Democratic donors are concerned, but this move left is supported by AOC and the others.
Major polls still show Joe Biden as the strongest candidate polling against President Trump. It will be interesting to see how the polling data moves if the top 5 in this poll continue to stand out ahead of the rest of the pack.
