Round 2 of the Democratic Debate was held on Thursday night. The first round on Wednesday was more like an amateur match compared to the heavy weights on Thursday nights card. Former VP Joe Biden was obviously being watched as the current front runner with everyone else vying for him and there were certainly some interesting moments in the debate.
Senator Kamala Harris, who has had a disappointing campaign so far, came out swinging against Trump, Biden and anyone else that was willing to get in her way. She received a lot of applause over many of her statements, including when she talked to all the candidates regarding their actions during the debate.
Biden started out strong and appeared to be on his way to an easy debate. As the night continued on, he faced some stiff rebuttals and seemingly was tired. I think his age is catching up to him and he certainly does not have the excitement of the Democratic base behind him. I think the moderates are carrying him in hopes he will save the party from the extreme left movement that is happening.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg presented very well during the debate, but there was one portion of the debate in which he struggled. No doubt he knew coming into the debates that he would have to answer for the recent police shooting in his town that has been in the media. As he responded, he received several attacks including a stinging one from Eric Swolwell. After this, Buttigieg went on the attack, even attacking Christians in a response which will not resonate well with those moderates as we discussed.
Most of the other candidates showed the same things we expected. Bernie Sanders appeared to be the crazy lunatic we all know him to be. Eric Swolwell proved that he is mostly interested in a gun grabbing campaign than anything. Many other candidates were vying for positions as a potential VP candidate for the front runners by the time the debate was over.
The last surprise of the debate was Marianne Williamson. Williamson was not very well known before the debate, but man did she gain some recognition through the debates and her completely off basis responses. In response to a question about what she would do her first day in office, she said she would call New Zealand and tell them how they were wrong. Quite an interesting response for someone who wants to be President.
It will be interesting to see poll results in the coming weeks. I expect Joe Biden will continue his fall and I feel that Bernie Sanders will as well. Elizabeth Warren will most likely continue her rise and I would expect that Kamala Harris will as well. The one I’m watching closest is Pete Buttigieg. I think that while he presented generally well, his responses to the question about the police shooting and his attack on Christians in a public environment may not resonate well and could cause him problems.
These debates certainly outlined how Democrats are out of touch with main stream America. If a candidate does not realize the need to focus on the moderate portions of the country, Democrats have set themselves up for a certain loss in November 2020.
