New poll results released on Monday show former Vice President Joe Biden continues to stumble following the first Democratic debates. The poll results from the recent CNN poll that ended on Sunday show that Biden now has 22% support, with his lead having shrank to just 5 % over now second place Senator Kamala Harris. This is an even more drastic change than the recent Morning Consult poll discussed on yesterday’s post.
This new CNN poll came along on the heels of reports that some Biden comments were not received very well on Sunday. Biden made remarks regarding people making fun of a gay waiter and how a few years ago it would have been let go in Seattle, but that times have changed now. Many pushed back on these statements as simply not true.
It highlights the rough week that sleepy Joe has had overall on the campaign trail. Biden has continued to take the stance of trying to tie his campaign to his time in the Obama administration. As much Biden would like to hold on to his past with Obama, the Democratic Party is not the same party it was just 3 short years ago.
Michael Dimock had a piece that posted over at the Pew Research Center in January 2017 regarding the changes of the Democratic Party during the Obama administration. There are several key points in the report that are very interesting. The article discusses the growth of millennials in regards to the percentage of voters in America. He discusses the political divide that grew between the parties. He even goes into detail about race relations and how they changed in the Obama Presidency.
America, and specifically the Democratic Party, was very different in 2008 when Obama was elected verses 2019. While some of the key party issues, such as Medicare for All, free healthcare for illegal immigrants and free college/college debt forgiveness all came up in 2016, they were not core beliefs of the Democratic Party as they are today.
For Joe Biden to remain relevant, he must realize the party is different and he will need to change with the party. In the end, that presents its on set of issues as those key moderates are completely left out. Any Democrat needs these voters to have a chance to defeat President Trump in 2020.
The Democratic Party continues with it’s all out race to the left. Sure, socialism is gaining in popularity overall, but the majority of American’s do not support it. If Biden and Harris continue the move toward the left, the chances for Democrats look very bleak in 2020.
