There was a flurry of articles on Thursday as news broke regarding the push for DC Statehood. The news is certainly not new, as there have been many pushes for statehood for DC in the past. The house held a new hearing regarding the matter as flags down Pennsylvania Ave were changed to flags with 51 stars.
Washington, DC was established as the US Capital in 1790. Years later, the 23rd amendment was passed which allowed residents of the city to vote in federal presidential elections. The city does not have representation in Congress, which is part of the push by the city. While they may have no specific congressional representative, they do have representatives on committees in Congress to lobby for the support of the city.
DC license plates have represented the claim for statehood for some time, with the slogan “taxation without representation.” While it’s a play on one of the statements to support the American separation from England, it is now used to attempt to justify the statehood argument. Democrats have long used this as a rallying point for those citizens in DC.
There’s a great article over at The Daily Signal from 2015 that identifies several reasons that DC will never be a state. In the article, it identifies that the 23rd amendment need to be repealed. In addition, there is legal precedent set that ruled it would be unconstitutional to allow the District of Columbia to be a state. But this didn’t stop Democrats from wasting another day on Capital Hill pandering for votes.
AOC got in on the action quickly on social media. She proved her US history knowledge with her tweet that ignored the 23rd amendment which gave DC residents the right to vote in federal elections. I wonder how many of her followers believe the nonsense that DC residents are not allowed to vote as she suggests. Not only are we worried about misinformed voters, but we are worried about uneducated congressional representatives.
DC was the 1st territory in the United States to free the enslaved.
It’s where Black Americans fled the tyranny of slavery & towards greater freedom, to DC. Yet today it’s where 2nd class citizenship reigns, and the right to vote is denied.
It’s time to recognize DC statehood. https://t.co/AkfaRHw38C

Her fellow squad members jumped in on the action as well. Rashida Tlaib has requested a 51 star flag to display in her office in support of DC statehood. What is interesting is that Tlaib could be fined in the very district she is supporting for displaying a flag that is not according to US flag code.
Ayanna Presley was directly involved in the hearing on statehood and made statements to support statehood.
Rep. Ayanna Pressley spoke up for #DCStatehood at a congressional hearing:
"For people in DC, taxation without representation is more than just a catchy hashtag … it is a harsh reality that leaves too many people on the margins of an unjust but great society." pic.twitter.com/Ik0sc1MFxK

When will the Democrats finally see the joke that these freshmen representatives are and the embarrassment they are to the Democratic Party. They want to get upset at President Trump for suggesting these 4 will help him win reelection, yet they aren’t even aware of who can vote in an election.
