Today, I sit and reflect on real American sacrifice. No, I don’t have Veterans Day confused with Memorial Day. I mean that I cannot help but sit and think about the sacrifice of anyone who has ever served in our armed forces. Let me explain.
As I sat down this morning with my coffee to read, the first article I came across was talking about the violence in Hong Kong. Another day of shootings and killings in the violent protests across the city. The people are protesting for freedom. Something that we take for granted every day.
After that, the next article I read was about the Berlin Wall and how it stood for 29 years. The 30th anniversary of the wall coming down was Saturday. It’s a reminder of the communism that was present in Germany. You can do a search on the internet and learn all about those who died chasing something we take for granted every day – freedom.
As you look back through history, we see these events over and over again. Whether it be someone dying for freedom in Hong Kong or over 30 years ago in Berlin. The stories continue back decades and centuries even. Yet, we have the privilege to wake up each and every day with what they crave – freedom.
Why do we have such freedom? Because of the men and women of the strongest and bravest military on earth. Whether they are serving stateside or abroad, these men and women tirelessly sacrifice their time and lives to allow us to enjoy the freedoms we enjoy each day.
Freedoms to disagree over the politics of our nation. Freedom to disagree over the economic system of our nation. Heck, freedom to disagree over simple things like the temperature in our offices or where we are having lunch. The fact is, people all across this world would give anything to enjoy the freedom that you and I have every day.
There are a lot of things said in politics these days that talk about sacrificing. Politicians would like you to believe they are sacrificing to make our country better. But it’s difficult to talk about sacrifice from a 6 figure job in a nice comfy office.
In the end, if we want to talk about sacrifice, let’s talk about real American sacrifice. The sacrifice of our men and women in uniform all across this world, so we can enjoy the freedoms we have each day. In the end, I am able to go home each night and enjoy my freedom because of their sacrifice and service. God bless all of the men and women who have served or are serving in our armed forces.
