Actor Jussie Smollett has filed a suit against the City of Chicago related to his false January 2019 claim he was attacked. Smollett, at the time, alleged that he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack. He alleged the attack happened around 2 AM after visiting a Subway by men inciting MAGA, President Trump’s 2016 campaign slogan initials.
In February, after 1,836 hours of investigation, Chicago Police determined that Smollett staged the attack. Apparentlu, he attempted to gain publicity through the stunt by paying two brothers to help him. Charges were filed against Smollett, but were dropped weeks later in a controversial move by the State Attorney. This move was criticized by both sides of the political arena.
Today, Smollett filed the suit related to the claim in retaliation to the suit that the City of Chicago filed. The City sued the actor for costs of the investigation. Smollett states the city is not entitled to this due to the bond payment that was made. He also states that he was the victim of malicious prosecution carried out by the city.
So I’m confused, how is Smollett the victim of anything here? In my opinion, Smollett should be thankful that he is not sitting in jail for the 16 felony charges that he was indicted on. Smollett is not the victim of any form of malicious prosecution.
Smollett claims that false and misleading information was released leading to media reports about him. Wasn’t media reports the exact thing that he was after? He would like to maintain that he is innocent, yet this is just another example of a lack of responsibility.
Smollett refuses to accept responsibility for his actions. The police department is not responsible for the humiliation and emotional distress that was caused by filing the false police report. As a result of Smollett’s false report, I wonder who else in the city of Chicago suffered emotional distress or humiliation?
Could it be that while someone was chasing Smollett’s false claims, someone lost their life? Or someone was a victim of a real crime? Yet, this is a very possible scenario. But remember, Smollett is the victim here. He suffered so much because he lied to police, let them waste nearly a full year of man hours on a false hate crime and got off without any prosecution.
Smollett is not a victim here. I hope the judge that takes this case immediately throws it out. This is an insult to the police department and the justice system. I don’t know about you, but I believe Smollett should drop his case. He should settle the civil claim with the City of Chicago regarding the money spent. He should realize everything here is his fault and accept responsibility for his stupid decision.
