If you are like me, I remember reading stories about how we were approaching a recession. Yes, while we were in a roaring economy with extremely low unemployment, the media reported we were approaching a recession. Just like this AP article, many news outlets were reporting that we were approaching some sort of climactic event. Then it suddenly went away.
The initial blame was laid on Trump, as everything else is. His tariffs on China were killing the US economy. US farmers were in dire straights struggling to survive, or so they said. While Trump gave a farm aid package, the left criticized it and said the economy was gone. We were approaching a trade war with China that we were going to lose.
Then The Washington Post ran this story on Sunday, about how the recession worries were gone. No, credit was not given to Trump for this at all. Credit was given to the cut in interest rates and the “slightly improved trade picture.” The story relayed how Trump “secured” Democrats approval for the NAFTA replacement and reached a limited agreement with China.
Obviously, the paper is using this as another event to attack President Trump, but they didn’t realize they are actually touting some of his biggest wins. I’ll admit the China tariff war was getting a little out of hand. Yet, to secure the trade agreement, even if not as big as he had hoped, is a win for the United States. This is the first time a President has stood up to China for the US worker. In the past, we consistently bowed to China as if we needed them to survive.
I’ll admit, President Trump has been aggressive in his work on the economy. The tariffs were a brave step in pushing China. The tax cuts have reduced tax liabilities for countless Americans. I see him continuing to push for easing regulations for business, which allows the free economy to truly work. While the Democrats would like to battle him, it’s hard to argue that he’s been successful.
As Nikki Haley said a couple weeks ago, President Trump is a disruptor. While the left wants to figure him out, they never will. Many on the right cannot figure him out! The status quo is simply not acceptable to President Trump. I, for one, like that. I consistently say to people around me, if we are not getting better we might as well pack up and go home.
The worries about the recession have lifted and the media has moved on. Most of the conversation around the economy has been positive of late. What happened? First of all, impeachment came along. They don’t need to attack Trump on a great economy as long as they have impeachment. Second, they realized that we, the American people, were not buying it.
Former President Obama said Trump couldn’t make the economy better. He actually said working for a better deal was not going to help. I recall his comments about Trump’s magic wand and saying this type of economic growth would never happen again. I’m not sure what magic wand Trump has, but I sure hope he keeps waving it around some more!
