On Wednesday, the Senate voted to acquit President Trump on both articles of impeachment. It was the expected defeat that has been predicted for months following the impeachment inquiry announced by Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Only one Republican, Senator Mitt Romney, broke ranks and voted with Democrats.
In the vote, the Senate chose to support the opinion of the American public. Split among party lines, recent polling shows that the majority of American support allowing President Trump to finish his term. The general consensus is that the President’s actions were not great, but that there was no evidence to support removing him from office.
The media and Democrats have already started on their newest lines of attacks. The media is claiming this is a victory for Democrats, even though they didn’t win this round. The argument is that vulnerable Republicans in the Senate are going to face a tougher reelection battle and that they have a chance to win the Senate.
All around Washington DC, Democrats are taking their talking points to anyone that will listen. Yet, the verdict doesn’t change. President Trump was acquitted. Just like we knew he would be all along. Pelosi argued last year that impeachment was divisive and that we should not go down that path unless there was “compelling and bipartisan” evidence.
Yet, she never got to the bipartisan level. Pelosi announced the impeachment inquiry in September, after months of fighting. She caved to the radical wing of her party. Those communist squad members and the Sanders/Warren supporters all pressured the Democrats into this impeachment battle. Democrats will argue that the support of Mitt Romney will qualify as bipartisan, but don’t believe it. Romney was never a hard core Republican – see his time as Massachusetts governor and Romneycare.
So did the Democrats win? Probably not. As James Robbins points out, President Trump just received his highest ever approval rating, which is higher than Obama’s at this point in his presidency. The economy is strong, as Trump pointed out during last nights State of the Union address. Democrats face a tough road to the presidency in 2020.
The biggest winner in this? It has to be the American public. Finally, the American public will stop hearing how their representatives are wasting time on this pointless trial. The Schiff show is now over and it’s time to move on.
