On Monday, a Virginia Senate Committee voted to table the proposed “assault weapon” ban by Governor Ralph Northam. In what was a significant blow to the governor’s gun control plan, Democratic senators were concerned about passing legislation that would affect so many current gun owners. According to the Associated Press article, this is the third of eight gun control measures to have been struck down.
The vote is a celebration for gun owners in the state as that faced the gun control measures after a sweeping Democratic win in last years elections. Democrats, who have majority control of state government in Virginia, were considered likely to pass sweeping measures such as these plans after their win. Instead, moderate Democrats balked at the idea.
One Democrat who voted to table the plan, Creigh Deeds, says there are more questions about the proposal than answers. He suggests that definitions matter when considering a bill of this measure. Four total Democrats voted to table the plan. Again, the vote was to table the plan. These were called a “bunch of wimps” by colleagues after the vote.
The bill still is still being considered, however, and cannot be considered as defeated. The bill is on pause as the state’s crime commission will investigate the matter further and make recommendations. Northam’s spokeswoman promised a return to the matter next year. Northam has been successful in many other gun measures, including red flag laws.
Thousands of people have flocked to support gun rights advocates in the fight. Recently, Arizona also proposed gun control measures to include a ban on “assault” weapons. The continued focus on gun control will not stop here. Gun control measures will continue to be a main focus of the 2020 election cycle.
Major Democratic candidates are all vowing to support these “assault weapon” bans and other gun control measures. This continues to highlight the major focus that should be on the 2020 election. This election is not about the Democrats defeating Trump. This election is truly about American liberty.
I’ve discussed before the proposals by the Democrats to remove freedoms. It’s not just about gun rights, either. Religious freedom, the right to life and freedom to choose are all at stake. I may not agree with all that the President does, but he has been an advocate for freedom. This is simply not something we see from the Democrats.
I’m reminded of a quote attributed to Samuel Adams. He said, “If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace.” We must continue to stand for freedom, there is a lot at stake.
