Now that Super Tuesday is over, it certainly seems the establishment Democrats have rallied around Joe Biden. We covered how Steyer, Buttigieg and Klobuchar all backed out of the race. Buttigieg and Klobuchar quickly backed Biden The focus quickly transitioned to Super Tuesday to see how the support would help Biden. It certainly did not hurt.
The question is what did Biden promise to get these concessions? It’s obvious that he was willing to promise positions. He released his plan to place Beto O’Rourke in charge of gun control. If you are conservative and this does not scare you, it should. Remember Beto O’Rourke claimed he would come and take guns from people. That position on guns is not moderate and shows that Biden is willing to do anything it takes to win these people over. It shows how desperate the Democrats have become. But back to Super Tuesday.
Biden performed well across many states, showing he is the choice of moderate voters verses Bloomberg. Some had thought that some of his gaffes would cause issues, but that was proven no issue to the voters. Reports are that Bloomberg’s campaign manager and senior advisors urged him to get out of the race before Super Tuesday and endorse Biden. He refused to do so. Now, the question is how long will he remain in the race before he goes. Bloomberg remaining in the race will cause issues for Biden against Sanders in close states.
But now, all the attention and focus is on Biden. Biden showed strong across the east coast and south, where he needed to. Easy wins in Virginia, North Carolina, Minnesota, Alabama and Tennessee really helped. Sanders had a strong performance in Vermont, Colorado, Utah and California. This was also expected. Sanders also performed well in Texas and Maine, narrowly losing to Biden. Bloomberg really struggled to gain any traction. Without a strong performance on Tuesday, there is no path forward for Bloomberg. Once he drops out of the race, all of his support will move to Biden.
The same can be said for Elizabeth Warren. Warren struggled to gain support in her home state. While Warren gave a speech vowing to fight on, the reality is she cannot win the nomination. AOC and many other Sanders supporters started a campaign on social media to reach out to Warren supporters. They realize they need these supporters to have a chance. I have said this for some time, both of these candidates cannot exist together.
If Warren exits the race, it allows the focus to completely turn to Biden and Sanders. Sanders will perform much better with Warren out of the race and may give Biden some issues in some late races. Especially depending on how Biden performs in future debates and in public appearances.
After Tuesday’s events, this is a show of two old white men. One with memory issues and one with anger issues. We still have a ways to go for the nomination. Who knows if either will achieve the required delegates. We also have to consider what happens to the Sanders voters if Biden does win in the moderate revolt we are seeing. It will definitely be an interesting thing to watch!
