On Monday evening, President Trump said that the White House is planning to ask Congress for relief for American workers dealing with Coronavirus. In the press conference, Trump said that meetings would take place on Tuesday to discuss a payroll tax cut and relief for hourly wage workers. Trump cites concerns about hourly workers possibly missing paychecks. This comes as quarantine policies are causing issues with the American workforce across the country.
US companies like Amazon, Google, Microsoft, Facebook and more have all taken steps to have their employees remote work. Other countries have taken similar measures in their workforce. But remote work is not always available and many people will be forced to miss days at work. Which turns the attention to the financial side where mandatory quarantines will take a toll on employees.
Many employers are implementing travel policies which would require a person to stay out of work for 14 days after travel. Missed pay can result in the loss of ability to purchase food or pay rent. The recommendation is to use an emergency fund, but over 53% of American’s do not have one. Stock futures jumped on Monday night after the news of the tax breaks.
While much of the media coverage has been hype to address fear over the virus, coverage is needed to share with the public important information. The hype has contributed to issues ranging from the stock market to things even as simple as ammunition. New York has taken to producing hand sanitizer due to shortages. Many are even watching potential drug shortages due to manufacturing issues.
We knew that COVID-19 quarantine’s would lead to issues, but the results have far outweighed what was expected. Many media outlets are celebrating as this could be one thing that hurts Trump’s reelection chances. The comparison to Hurricane Katrina and how the federal response to it is much worse than Katrina are already happening. You certainly cannot let a good crisis go to waste right?
Worldwide, response to the virus have varied. Starting on Tuesday, Italy is extending quarantine measures nationwide. Previously it was limited to specific areas of the country. The World Health Organization says that the virus is on the verge of pandemic stage. Cases in the US are still relatively low, but rising daily.
In Annals of Internal Medicine, the incubation period of Coronavirus was described. According to the journal, the average incubation period is 5 days, with symptoms showing up in almost all instances in 2 weeks. The CDC continues to maintain their list of prevention and treatment methods on their website and updating as necessary.
