Charlotte, N.C. – The growing question across the country is will President Trump issue a federal stay order. Many states, like California and New York, have already issued orders for residents to remain at home. Even though some are defying the orders, many Americans are listening. President Trump recently activated the National Guard at the federal governments expense to aid the hardest hit states.
New reports are that there is growing frustration inside the White House regarding a potential stay order across the entire country. The NBC News article cites the potential end of the 15 day window given by the federal government as a launching point for the economy. But will it actually be the start of improvement for the economy? While the 15 day federal government suggestion ends, many state governments are still imposing strict stay orders.
President Trump has attempted to stay away from a federal stay order, preferring to allow states to handle as needed. Many have pointed to China’s actions with mandatory quarantines as a means to curb the virus. Is that the right answer for the United States? Not necessarily. There is a tremendous cost that comes with shutting down the country.
Our country is already dealing with massive issues economically. The stock market is down thousands of points, having lost millions in value. Americans are dealing with no work in many states due to the state mandates. The economy is hurting, we all see it. Can you imagine a complete shut down for 2 weeks or even up to 1 month to help with the spread of the virus?
Many states have already taken drastic measures, specifically those in Democratic control. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom suggests that schools may remain closed for the rest of the year. In North Carolina, Governor Roy Cooper closed schools through May.
. @NC_Governor: Therefore, today I will sign an executive order that closes public K-12 schools across North Carolina for in-person instruction until May 15.

These governors are essentially pushing President Trump’s hand. While he prefers to try to get back to business as usual, these states are taking aggressive steps and business will not return to usual for some time. As more states continue to announce stay orders, will President Trump step forward and make it national?
While I agree with letting states decide on how best to manage, President Trump may want to consider this extreme step. If he continues to allow states to scatter these orders across time, the effects could linger late into the summer. If he takes the unprecedented step of doing this on a national level, encouraging the states to comply, it could prevent that.
The end result on our economy will be devastating, but may not be as volatile as the current state. I’m not saying this is a perfect answer, but it is definitely worth considering. While I know President Trump wants to get the economy started back in the right direction, the Democrats will continue these closures and delays. They will win the argument of public perception, because people are worried about this virus. Trump needs to play a perfect game of chess to continue to out maneuver these Democrats.
