Washington, D.C. – Approximately 3.3 million Americans applied for unemployment last week. This comes as a result of the coronavirus chaos and the multiple shut downs across various states. This shattered the previous record by over 4 times according to the Associated Press.
Estimates are that there could be up to 1 million more claims this week. Across the country, restaurants, bars, gyms and many other service locations are closed at the orders of state governors. Recent unemployment had been at historical lows of just over 3%. Some analysts predict it could be as high as 15% during the height of the coronavirus crisis.
According to the AP report, there have been some issues in states with filing claims. Many of the state agencies were not operating at highest levels due to strong employment numbers. Many states have made rapid adjustments to their unemployment process, expanding benefits. The federal government is also planning assistance for these individuals as well.
