Texas Town To Charge And Fine Residents For Not Using Masks

Laredo Requires face covering

Laredo, T.X. – In Texas, one town says you cannot leave your house without a mask. The city of Laredo has announced a misdemeanor charge and $1,000 fine for residents who will leave their home without wearing some form of face covering. Anyone over the age of 5 will be required to wear a covering anytime they leave their home.

The rest of the country is struggling with locating masks for critical healthcare workers. Laredo wants everyone to wear something, no matter the situation. The Texas governor has already asked the public to stay home over the course of the next month, but he did not issue it as an executive order. Most governors have opted for the executive order route. The City of Laredo has it’s own stay order that was passed as well.

According to the cities website, Laredo has 65 cases of COVID-19 and has had 5 deaths. The city felt this warranted mandating facial covering before going into public buildings. While there are many opinions on the effectiveness of non-medical grade masks, this study has found that home made masks are better than nothing.

The real question is will the people of Laredo opt for homemade items as they should? Many may resort to items that could be used by healthcare workers. Many people may not have masks at home, needing to obtain the items from a local store to make one. If residents of Laredo are able to obtain the items, The NY Times gave instructions on how to make a fabric mask recently.

Is this a sound policy or another example of government overreach? We would love to hear your thoughts. Please share in the comments below or on our social media pages.
