Washington, D.C. – Americans across the country are still struggling with the coronavirus and the mandatory closures that many have implemented. The Paycheck Protection Program is broke leaving millions of small businesses and their employees wondering what to do. All the while, the United States continues to give millions of dollars in aid across the world to battle COVID-19.
According to the state department release, millions of dollars has been pledged to aid in international relief across the world. There is a place and time for international aid, but is that time now while American citizens are struggling? I am sure that some will argue that the amounts are minuscule in comparison to what is needed in the US for aid. But  lets take a closer look.
If you look through the list of countries receiving aid, there are a few concerning ones. Syria, Libya and Venezuela specifically. How do you feel about those countries receiving millions in aid from the US amid the crisis? Yet, it’s happening.
Not only are we funding in questionable countries, but our funding is going into questionable places. For example, in Greece, the monies given was earmarked for migrants and refugees. As one source put it, these are the illegal immigrants in Greece. I will have to say, I am torn in this situation.
First of all, I’m torn because I know that we have a great opportunity in the United States to provide this type of assistance across the world. I want our country to be a leader and show others how to care. While I question some of the items, in general I’m proud that we are helping other countries.
But the second part of me is significantly torn. Why? Because we are providing aid to other countries, when our Congress is not getting things done at home. Democrats continue to stall recovery proposals for pet projects and pandering. They certainly didn’t seem to have issues giving these millions to other countries.
It is time to get serious about a recovery plan in the United States and deal with things at home. President Trump laid out guidelines for opening. This has put the pressure back on governors to open their states back up. While some, like NY, have extended closures into May, many others are able to open sooner. Texas looks to be the first state to open back up in the coming days.
President Trump openly called on several states to liberate themselves on Twitter on Friday. He called on Minnesota, Michigan and Virginia to all liberate themselves, seeming to side with protesters in those states. Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) will be taking part in a protest himself. This is in response to a recent arrest in NC of a protester who was obeying restrictions. She was told that her right to protest was not essential.
On Friday, President Trump also issued calls for Congress to come back to Washington and start working for Americans. Congress Is currently in recess until May 4th over coronavirus fears.

Americans need their representatives to get their act together. People are struggling and hurting across the world, but we have a responsibility to take care of people here. Not just to give away money, but to responsibly take care of those people. That means getting the economy back to work and making sure the small businesses have the ability to survive after mandatory closures.
