Washington, D.C. – The F.D.A. is expected to announce emergency approval for one coronavirus treatment. The NY Times is reporting that the drug remdesivir will be receiving the approval as early as Wednesday. Dr Anthony Fauci has said he is very optimistic based on the initial results.
Two studies of the medication from Gilead Sciences Inc. were just released. In one study, the patients had a speedier recovery than those who were not given the medication. A second study gave mixed results, however. This study was stopped short in China due to the changes in the outbreak there.
In the data released by Gilead, the results seemed positive. Dr Fauci has been quick to downplay potential treatments. His support of the data and the approval of the treatment huge.
While the studies are not full trials, this is the first treatment that is shown to have a positive effect on the coronavirus patients. To date, there are over 1 million cases of the coronavirus in the United States. The announcement may be made during the Trump press briefing on Wednesday evening.
