Charlotte, NC – On Friday, NBC News shared that the DC Mayor, Muriel Bowser, had the phrase Black Lives Matter painted onto the street leading up to the White House. The move came after “peaceful protestors” were removed from the area around Lafayette Park earlier in the week. NBC News shares that the reason was to honor the demonstrators from Monday.
In addition to the painting of the mural, the mayor also designated a new name for the area. The area has now been named Black Lives Matter Plaza.
When asked for a statement, Black Lives Matters DC said that the move was an empty gesture and that the mayor was pandering to white liberals. The group continued saying that the way to address the issue was to defund the police. The group continues to advocate for lawlessness across the country.
Bowser has attacked Trump since the move earlier in the week. She made scathing remarks about how the protestors were dealt with. She also shared a letter on Thursday where she asked for the removal of all extraordinary federal forces from the area.
I request that @realDonaldTrump withdraw all extraordinary federal law enforcement and military presence from our city. pic.twitter.com/AvaJfQ0mxP

Bowser allowed the riots to continue around DC without addressing them. Attorney General Barr decided to establish a larger perimeter around the White House. He gave the order and stated that it was not done in coordination with the Trump visit to the church nearby.
Since the President made his announcement, riots across the country seem to have given way to more peaceful protests. While there have been a few instances of violence, most of those have subsided. Several more demonstrations are planned across the country over the coming weekend.
