New York, NY – Researchers in England say that they have found a cheap medication that can improve coronavirus survival for those infected with the virus. The medication, dexamethasone, is a widely available steroid and improved patient mortality by over 30%. The test was over 1 month and involved patients that needed oxygen treatment due to their symptoms.
The news is welcome as the world continues to search for treatments for the coronavirus. To date, the virus is credited to have taken nearly half a million lives. Previous research was placed into other medications, but the benefits have not been realized. Another medication, remdesivir, is shown to improve recovery times in patients with coronavirus.
There is significant hope that a vaccine will be approved and available by the fall or winter across the US. A vaccine is the most certain way to help prevent infection with COVID-19, and several vaccines are in final research phases.
States across the country had begun to lift lockdown measures that were put into place to control the spread. Now, new cases are appearing in various spots causing concerns about additional lockdowns. Other states are looking at modifications to their current restrictions in place, such as mandating the use of face masks. The majority of states have some form of restrictive measures still in place.
