On Friday, September 18th, 2020, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg died at her home in Washington, D.C., at the age of 87. Ginsburg, who was a champion of women’s equality, died following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Several key Republicans, including Senator Mitt Romney of Utah, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have announced their support to vote for President Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court to fill the now vacant seat left by Ginsburg.
Senator Romney explained, “The Constitution gives the president the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees.” Romney added, “Accordingly, I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the president’s nominee. If the nominee reaches the Senate floor, I intend to vote based upon their qualifications.”
Democrats are less enthusiastic about filling the vacant spot on the Supreme Court until after the November election, or even possibly holding it off until January in hopes that former Vice President and Democratic Presidential nominee, Joe Biden will win the election and be the one to fill the vacant seat on the Supreme Court.
President Trump announced during a campaign rally that he will be nominating a woman to the Supreme Court. The President has already narrowed his list down to five choices, two of whom are Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals and Judge Barbara Lagoa of the 11th Circuit Court.
The President explained on Monday that he would wait until the memorial services for Justice Ginsburg had finished to announce his decision.
