Charlotte, NC — An advisor to the FDA announced over the weekend that the agency will review the Pfizer vaccine data on Thursday and will take a vote for approval. The decision should be announced by the end of the day Thursday if emergency approval has been granted, paving the way for millions of Americans to receive the vaccine.
Pfizer is one of two companies that have filed for approval for their vaccine, with a decision on Moderna’s vaccine to be expected soon as well. Both vaccines were developed as part of Operation Warp Speed, an initiative by President Trump to develop a vaccine in record time to help curb the pandemic.
The advisor made his comments while on the Today show, and you can see his comments in the video below.
The CDC has already indicated that frontline healthcare workers and long-term care residents will be the first in line to receive the vaccine. The question becomes, will Americans take the vaccine?
In September, Americans were divided nearly in half over the decision to take the COVID-19 vaccine once it was released. A more recent poll shows that 60% of Americans would take the vaccine. At least 2 in 10 Americans are absolutely certain they will not accept the vaccine no matter what.
As the focus turns to frontline healthcare workers and first responders, will these critical workers take the vaccine? Over half the FDNY members have said they do not want to accept the vaccine. Of those questioned, they said they wanted more information about the vaccine before they would consider taking it.
The CDC and healthcare leaders have indicated that having Americans take the vaccine is the quickest way to return to normal. They indicate that the majority of Americans would need to take the vaccine to remove restrictions and regulations that governments have placed on their citizens. Many view these restrictions as unconstitutional, even in the midst of a global pandemic.
One former Democratic presidential candidate has suggested that the federal government should pay Americans to take the vaccine. He proposed a $1,500 stimulus check for anyone willing to take the vaccine.
As the first doses of the vaccine are expected to be authorized and potentially administered on Friday, what do you think? Will you take the coronavirus vaccine? Are you looking for more information before you take it, or will you refuse it entirely? Comment below and tell us your thoughts!
