Charlotte, NC — The US House of Representatives has impeached President Donald Trump for the second time in his four years in office. The vote was 232-197 and was supported by both Republicans and Democrats. Ten Republicans sided with Democrats in the vote.
Several Republicans had said they would vote to impeach President Donald Trump before the vote. Rep.’s Liz Cheney (WY), John Kato (NY), Adam Kinzinger (IL), Fred Upton (MI), Jaime Herrera Beutler (WA), and Dan Newhouse (WA) all said they would support the measure. Many others shared they were considering support as the vote neared.
The impeachment comes as no surprise as Democrats had planned to impeach the President if Vice President Mike Pence did not invoke the 25th Amendment. Pence had no appetite for such a move, so Democrats introduced the new articles of impeachment on Monday.
Democrats have indicated that they will not immediately transmit the articles to the Senate. Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) says that the chamber would not take up the trial until after Biden takes office.
It is unclear how many Republicans in the Senate will support impeachment and if the measure would pass. Democrats hold 50 of the 67 votes needed to convict. Many believe Romney, Collins, and Murkowski will all vote to convict. A report from The New York Times on Tuesday seems to indicate McConnell may support conviction as well.
While McConnell may seem supportive of the move, he did decline to take up the measure ahead of Biden’s inauguration. That announcement was made before the House vote on Wednesday as McConnell will allow Democrats to take up the measure once they take control.
