If Trump were to start a new party, who would join?

Trump said, “We will be back in some form.” While the statement appears vague on the surface, you can easily piece together some of the story behind the scenes with other reports.

We are all aware that President Donald Trump wanted to be President again. He had every intention of another term, fighting until the last possible day against the election result. While he ultimately lost that battle, he still has plenty of options.

Take for example the recent Wall Street Journal report that Trump is talking about starting a third party. One thing that the article shares which is true, Trump brought a lot of people into involvement in politics that were never involved before. That sort of movement is something that the Republicans have struggled with.

Third parties have been rather difficult in the US for some time. The largest is probably the Libertarian Party, but if you look at a list, there are multiple options in the states across the country. The third party idea faces a lot of challenges, but this is an interesting thought.

If President Donald Trump, who has the financial resources necessary, decides to push a third-party, who would join it? Both the Republicans and Democrats have their party fractures, but it’s not clear where enough support would come from to give the third party what is necessary to compete for votes.

Not all of the 74 million Americans that voted for President Donald Trump will join a third party. Not all of the 80+ million that are claimed to have voted for Biden will remain with the Democrats either. That’s where I think this gets interesting.

Many voted against President Donald Trump simply because of his personality. They liked his policy but hated the brashness of Trump. If President Donald Trump were to establish a party with the same policies, would that appeal across both aisles and cause issues?

I think we are all very well aware that the Democrats are moving into socialist territory as well, which leaves many moderate Democrats feeling left out. While they voted for Biden, they will not support the socialist movement.

I would not expect that many of these would move to the newly suggested Patriot Party, however. One could suggest they would have more closely identified with the moderate Republicans like Bush or Romney, they did not leave the party then. Times have changed, however, and if the Republican Party ends up in the middle, it could pull a portion of voters from the Democrats.

If he were to successfully divide the Republican Party, as most suggest this move might, it could cause a ripple effect. Moderate Democrats could flee for a more moderate Republican Party. The key is what happens with the third parties and independents.

Would Trump be able to appeal to those independent voters? Those Libertarian and alternate parties represent a percentage of American voters that would give Trump an interesting edge.

Trump had an appeal to some of those independents, but I believe recent events may have caused him issues. However, without Trump catering to the Republican’s demands, would that appeal return?

While third parties have struggled in the US, there could be an opportunity here if it were positioned correctly. Trump has the type of following that would be needed to establish a strong party, and new parties have come about at transitional periods like this in our country before.
