Charlotte, NC — On Monday, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) reintroduced a constitutional amendment to enact term limits in Congress. Cruz shared the news on his Twitter account with a copy of the proposed legislation. You can review the document below.
Today my colleagues and I reintroduced a constitutional amendment to impose #TermLimits on Members of Congress. The amendment would limit U.S. senators to two six-year terms and members of the U.S. House of Representatives to three two-year terms. pic.twitter.com/1izmg5EQ6B

This is not the first time that Cruz has introduced such legislation. He first introduced the bill in 2019 in the 116th Congress, which failed to garner support. He has been vocal about his support of term limits and has suggested the bill should be passed.
In his comments, Cruz said, “The rise of political careerism in today’s Congress is a sharp departure from what the Founders intended for our federal governing bodies. I have long called for this solution for the brokenness of Washington, D.C., and I will continue fighting to hold career politicians accountable. As I have done in the past, I urge my colleagues to submit this constitutional amendment to the states for speedy ratification.”
In the proposal, House members would be limited to three terms and Senators limited to two terms. This would overhaul Congress and prevent the career politicians that are currently in office.
Term limits have become more popular in recent years. In last year’s election, nearly 100 members of Congress pledged to support the measure soon after the election.
It does not appear that the amendment will make any progress as a majority of Democrats have opposed the suggestion. Democrats control both houses of Congress and the proposal will likely never make an appearance for consideration and adoption.
