Charlotte, NC — In an open letter released yesterday, Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden urged him to “honor his commitment” and include the Hyde Amendment in the Democrats’ $1.9 trillion ‘COVID-19’ spending package that only allocates 9 percent to COVID relief. These evangelicals “feel used and betrayed.” The letter states:
We are very disappointed about the COVID-19 relief package’s exclusion of the Hyde Amendment, a longstanding bipartisan policy that prevents taxpayer funding for abortion. We’re even more upset that the Biden administration is supporting this bill. As pro-life leaders in the evangelical community, we publicly supported President Biden’s candidacy with the understanding that there would be engagement [with] us on the issue of abortion and particularly the Hyde Amendment …We feel used and betrayed and have no intention of simply watching these kinds of efforts happen from the sidelines.

Keep in mind this is the same group who have spent the past years and especially the past few months leading up to the election explicitly or implicitly condemning a vote for Donald Trump as a vote for hate also claiming a vote for Joe Biden is a vote for decency, love, respect, dignity, normalcy. These are the same Christians who care deeply about obeying God both publicly and privately with many claiming to care about religious liberty. However, they outright insisted that voting for Trump was worse than anything that Biden and Democrats could ever do should they win the White House and Congress.
There are organizations that purport to be bipartisan saying they care about religious freedom and protections for LGBTQ people who are only now sounding the alarms on what the Equality Act actually means when they had ample opportunity to do so ahead of time. These same Christians who are strenuously saying this is the single greatest threat to religious liberty that they’ve seen. All of which brings me to my question:
Where have you been!?
Trump supporters tried to warn people this assault on religious liberty was coming that a vote for Democrats will result in them doing stupid, freedom limiting things like this. In fact, this is just one of the things we will see coming from these people until, hopefully and prayerfully, it stops in 2022 when Republicans take back the House. Perhaps Biden evangelicals will stop voting with the party that literally hates them?
Biden isn’t a moderate and he never pretended to be. The only individuals intent on having Americans believe that lie was the media on MSDNC and CNN for months who tried to position a Biden administration as one that won’t threaten freedoms and liberties.
In fact, during an Atlanta Democratic National Convention Committee event in 2019, Biden loudly announced he no longer supported the Hyde Amendment. The Hyde Amendment had been included on a bipartisan basis in federal spending bills since 1976 restricting federal taxpayer dollars from funding many abortions.
“If I believe health care is a right, as I do, I can no longer support an amendment that makes that right dependent on someone’s ZIP code,” Biden said in May 2019 in a video posted by the American Civil Liberties Union.
Then-nominee Biden was given cover for the major reversal this was given Biden claimed in his 2008 book “Promises to Keep” that “I’ve stuck to my middle-of-the-road position on abortion for more than thirty years. I still vote against partial birth abortion and federal funding.” In fact, Biden’s campaign still claimed he supported the amendment even in June 2019.
Despite the change of hear from Biden, more than 5,000 “pro-life evangelicals” endorsed his candidacy for POTUS in October 2020. They did note of their disagreement with Vice President Biden and the Democratic platform on the issue of abortion, but still claimed “Joe Biden’s policies are more consistent with the biblically shaped ethic of life than those of Donald Trump.”
“Knowing that the most common reason women give for abortion is the financial difficulty of another child, we appreciate a number of Democratic proposals that would significantly alleviate that financial burden: accessible health services for all citizens, affordable childcare, a minimum wage that lifts workers out of poverty,” the October letter stated. “For these reasons, we believe that on balance, Joe Biden’s policies are more consistent with the biblically shaped ethic of life than those of Donald Trump. Therefore, even as we continue to urge different policies on abortion, we urge evangelicals to elect Joe Biden as president.”
Yesterday’s letter comes after Senate Democrats, without fail, rejected Oklahoma Senator James Lankford’s effort to include the Hyde Amendment in the $1.9 trillion spending package in which allocations have nothing to do with COVID relief. Democratic Senators Bob Casey (D-PA), Tim Kaine (D-VA), and Joe Manchin (D-WV) voted for Lankford’s amendment unaware that it would ultimately fail given their colleagues’ positions on the issues.
Before Lankford’s attempt, 48 Republican senators pledged to oppose any spending bill that does not include the Hyde Amendment last month. Over two hundred Republican members of the House signed a joint letter addressed to Congress in January demanding the Hyde Amendment be respected.
“We call on President Biden to honor his commitment to us and immediately demand the House of Representatives apply the Hyde language to the American Relief package,” the Pro-Life Evangelicals for Biden coalition continues. “This is no time for radical change to longstanding abortion policy.”
It is unclear what “commitment” Biden had provided the evangelical coalition, given his vocal denouncement of the Hyde Amendment before assuming the presidency. The letter was signed by Dr. Richard Mouw, president emeritus of Fuller Seminary, as well as Ronald J. Sider, president emeritus of Evangelicals for Social Action.
Ultimately, Biden never kept the secret of who he really is. He is not a moderate! He is a proponent of taxpayer funded abortion through nine-months, against religious liberty, against school choice for predominately poor students, and he is definitely in favor of men having access to women’s spaces.
But a lot of these Biden evangelicals rolled their eyes and said, “Yeah! But Trump…! Look at what Trump said! Look at this headline! Look at how bad he is! Anyone who votes for him is a racist!” They said a vote for Joe Biden was a vote for kindness and love. Again, where have you been?! You aligned yourself with the party that literally hates you and what you believe! Why? Orange Man Bad!
