Charlotte, NC — After just two days of deliberations, the jury in the case of Derek Chauvin reached a verdict in the case. Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The deliberations were less than 10 hours in total.
The mainstream media and Black Lives Matter groups had been pushing for a guilty verdict from the day that George Floyd died while in police custody. Chauvin was quickly arrested and charged in the case. The quick deliberation was quite a surprise but almost assured a guilty verdict.
Police agencies across the country were bracing for riots and protests following the verdict on Tuesday. Minneapolis has been dealing with protests for many nights as a result of the ongoing trial. Crowds started forming as soon as news outlets began reporting that a verdict was reached.
Multiple high-profile Democrats had made pleas for a guilty verdict, even though there were significant concerns that Floyd could have died as a result of drugs in his system. President Joe Biden and Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA) both made news in the past few days with their statements about the case. The case has received near nonstop coverage on mainstream media outlets with social justice advocates pushing for a guilty verdict.
The judge in the case indicated that an appeal to the verdict could gain some traction based on the statements by Rep. Waters. Others have indicated that President Biden’s comments could also be concerning if the case was appealed.
