Milwaukee, WI — The Catholic Diocese of La Crosse, Wisconsin is working on removing a priest targeted by cancel culture and an organization proclaiming itself a grassroots Christian group that openly rejects the Bible’s teachings on issues from economics to sexuality.
The diocese issued a statement, dated May 24, that it was starting “the canonical process as needed for the removal of a priest from his office as pastor,” referring to Father James Altman of St. James the Less Church. It adds that “this is not a penal remedy but a pastoral remedy.”
As reported early last month, Altman was targeted by a group called Faithful America for warning his parishioners about the dangers of the COVID-19 vaccines and for questioning the authoritarian regulations that have been put in place over the last year. In his May 23 homily, Altman made public that he was asked to resign by Bishop William Patrick Callahan but refused.
St. James the Less’ weekly bulletin has consistently warned: “DO NOT BE ANYONE’S GUINEA PIG.” The May 23 bulletin took aim at the seemingly weak state of American Christians with this photo:
As stated by the diocese: “During the past year, concerns have been expressed related to the ministry of Fr. James Altman…. Bishop Callahan of the Diocese of La Crosse, and canonical representatives have worked to fraternally and privately address those concerns. The process has been pastoral and administrative with a desire toward a just resolution among all parties.”
Faithful America, which has no affiliation with the Catholic Church, released a petition with nearly 19,000 signatures demanding removal of Altman because of his “anti-vaccine antics and flouting of diocesan and county COVID-19 protocols” and for “slandering life-saving public-health officials like Dr. Anthony Fauci as ‘Nazi-esque’ ‘godless vermin.’” The group shows little concern with the fact that the COVID-19 vaccines remain experimental and the deadliest vaccines ever approved by the government.
Life Site News, which is a Catholic-affiliated news organization, has launched a fundraiser for Altman in response. Its fundraising platform, LifeFunder, shows that over $300,000 has been raised in a little over a week.
Altman said on May 23 that he was accused of being “divisive” and “ineffective” by Callahan, but he’s fighting back and remains listed on the church’s staff page. He called the left “little pansy babies” who don’t want to hear the truth.
Noting that Jesus “came to divide the truth versus the lie,” Altman asked: “Why is anyone accusing me of being divisive like as if that’s a bad thing? If we know that the truth divides, and we do exactly as Jesus said it did, and if I am speaking the truth, then why is any good Catholic complaining about me being divisive?”
Altman added: “The answer, dear family, is that no good Catholic is complaining. As a matter of fact, good Catholics around the world have been very, very supportive. Unfortunately, in our cancel culture, if the left whines like a spoiled brat often enough they succeed in cancelling so many voices of truth.”
In a May 30 homily, Altman thanked the La Crosse Tribune, which has led a smear campaign against him, “because in your bitter foolishness, you spread the gospel better than we ever could.”
Beyond the COVID-19 tyranny, Altman has called out hypocrisy in the church and godless politicians as well as called leftist Catholics as “wolves in sheep’s clothing.”
