WASHINGTON — On Tuesday, House Democrats approved a measure to raise the debt ceiling, enabling Democrats to finance their spending plans that they intend to force through Congress in the coming weeks. The vote was along party lines in both the House and Senate. Well, the votes that passed the measure that is.
Hundreds of House members did not show up to vote for the measure. Almost 200 members of Congress filed for proxy voting.
As the House approaches the 5pm vote series, 197 members have sent a letter designating another member to vote on their behalf, using a system called proxy voting. Each member who signs this letter says they can’t vote in perspon “due to the ongoing public health emergency."

Not to mention that several Republicans, who are suing over the constitutionality of proxy voting, also filed letters in order to not show up for work.

The vote in the Senate was 50-48 and led to Chuck Schumer blasting Republicans for nearly placing the country in a position of catastrophe. But it was nothing more than political theater.
The real story in all of this is still Mitch McConnell and how he enabled the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling. If you recall, he is the one that agreed to waive the majority voting rule in order to pass the debt ceiling increase on party lines.
Then, McConnell wants to act like he is going to play hardball and that he will not help Democrats to raise the debt ceiling in December. But is that not the same rhetoric he used this time?
Was it not McConnell who said that Democrats should go at this alone? He said that they should figure out a way to handle it without the Republicans. Then, he caved anyway.
Not just McConnell, but also the other Republicans who went along with him to vote and allow the 60 vote threshold to be removed. These fake Republicans have put our nation into an even bigger debt crisis, but what’s more, they have enabled the Democrats in ways some may have not considered.
Democrats now have the ability to pass their spending plan without the worry of default. That means that the Democrats can pass their entitlement programs that will help them win over voters. McConnell believes that Americans will see through the plan, but will they?
Just take for example the current employment crisis across our country. Millions of jobs open, but millions are not working. They had a taste of universal income in staying at home, drawing unemployment, and not worrying about work. They have no concerns over their bills because the government has protected them from their house payments and student loan payments.
Do these “Republicans” really believe that this will change when Democrats work to push for more education debt relief, free housing, and more? I don’t think so. It looks like this could be an easy win for Democrats in this situation.
If my thought is correct, not only does this help Democrats, now, but it also helps them in the 2022 and 2024 election. If they successfully pass their plan, and many Americans embrace it as they have other measures, then the Democrats have all the ammunition they need to defeat the Republicans.
I am not talking about a temporary defeat, but a defeat that could last for years.
If Democrats successfully win the 2022 midterms because of this, they could easily walk their way into a 2024 win as well. That’s the scary thought about this. McConnell and these “Republicans” gambled with America’s future in a way that many may have not realized.
But more than just a gamble for the future, McConnell and company secured trillions more in national debt for America’s future generations. Even if the Democrats pass the measures, but lose future elections, we will be saddled by this debt for generations to come. It is an expensive gamble either way.
And to that, China is just sitting back smiling. They realize what’s happening, even when our own elected leaders do not.
