Sympathy for the Devil? No Way

Wisconsin, Darrell Brooks, Waukesha

Concord, NH — Darrell Brooks claims he is being demonized and dehumanized. You are damn right he is, and he deserves it. Brooks can play the sympathy card, but few will fall for the trick.

Darrell Brooks is the man who got into his SUV, drove over his girlfriend, and then proceeded to drive at high speed, through wooden barriers, and into the Waukesha, Wisconsin Christmas Parade. The result of his rampage was 62 people injured and six killed, as of today. Lives lost and families changed forever, and Darrell Brooks is looking for sympathy. I don’t think he will be getting any from these families who will live with loss or trauma forever.

This entire story never had to be written. Six people would still be alive and enjoying the holiday season. Dozens of families would not be dealing with the horror of seeing their family members bowled over by the SUV driven by Darrell Brooks. Darrell Brooks should have been incarcerated. Darrell Brooks should be paying for his past crimes instead of driving his SUV into a holiday parade. The system failed and now has blood on its hands.

Darrell Brooks is 39 years old and has a lifetime of crime to his credit. He has a 50-page rap sheet dating back to 1999. According to allegations in court records, the last three charges were connected to domestic abuse.

The woman alleged to be the victim in that incident was the mother of Brooks’ child. Court records allege that Brooks punched her and later ran over her in a gas station parking lot with his car. The documents say police noticed dried blood on her face, a swollen lip, and tire tracks on her left pants leg.

The court records showed that Brooks posted a $1,000 cash bond to secure his freedom on November 11. Ten days later, he killed six and changed the lives of dozens forever. These lives are forever ended or changed because the system thought $1,000 was sufficient bail for a lifetime offender.

Over the last few years, the movement to do away with incarceration and to end cash bail has to end. Are there people in jail who do not deserve imprisonment? Absolutely. People involved with drug crimes like marijuana use or sales do not deserve to be behind bars, nor does the individual dressed as Chewbacca, who is serving forty-one months for his part in the January 6th assault on the Capitol.

Some people do need to be isolated from the public. When a person shows a pattern of repeat offenses, like Darrell Brooks, put him away and lose the key. He is not worthy of freedom and any more chances. After a twenty-year crime spree, his days of freedom should be over. If not, we can mourn his victims. We can make excuses, but that will not bring back those innocent people gone forever.

Forget sympathy. Accountability is what someone like Darrell Brooks needs. And the people who let him off easy, the prosecutors and judges that washed their hands of him and set him free for $1,000, are as culpable as if they drove the SUV themselves. The system is broken. Progressives have torn it down. They can now see the fruits of their beliefs. I hope they toss and Tuen at night, but I bet they sleep like babies.
