PHOENIX, Ariz. — Rep. Ruben Gallego, a Democrat representing a deep-blue, majority-Hispanic district in Phoenix, Arizona, took to Twitter on Monday to dismantle the woke left’s usage of the term “Latinx.”
Gallego addressed the term’s usage following POLITICO’s reporting on a poll by Bendixen & Amandi International, a Democrat-aligned Hispanic outreach firm.
The poll found that 40% of Hispanic voters stated that the term, meant to be a politically correct, hyper-inclusive catchall, is offensive to them. 30% of respondents agreed that they would actually be less likely to vote for a candidate using the term. Furthermore, only 2% of respondents said that they referred to themselves as “Latinx,” compared to a combined 89% using “Hispanic” and “Latino” or “Latina.”
Gallego blasted the term as “performative” and used by politicians looking to “appease rich white progressives who think [it] is the term [Hispanic Americans] use,” and stated that his office is not allowed to use it in official communications.
He also went on to note the redundancy of the term, citing “Hispanic” and “Latin American” — terms that have been used for decades — as perfectly acceptable gender-neutral means of referring to the group, again stressing that “Latinx” is a performative, tone-deaf neologism meant to appease party elites.
To be clear my office is not allowed to use “Latinx” in official communications.
When Latino politicos use the term it is largely to appease white rich progressives who think that is the term we use. It is a vicious circle of confirmation bias. https://t.co/kMty6q7UQn— Ruben Gallego (@RubenGallego) December 6, 2021
It will not lose you an election but if your staff and consultants use Latinx in your mass communication it likely means they don’t understand the Latino community and is indicative of deeper problems.

Gallego, of course, is entirely correct.
Spanish is a gendered language, as is very often the case with Romance languages. There are “masculine” and “feminine” nouns.
Such is unacceptable for the modern left, who believe the concept of gender to be not only an abstract social construct, but an oppressive social construct. However, as opposed to accepting one of the most basic realities of the human condition — that gender is binary, and that all of our social customs are built around that incredibly simple dichotomy — they subvert it. It’s exclusionary, so it has to go.
Naturally, very few Americans actually buy into that, and that’s what polls are beginning to show — as is the case with “Latinx.” It’s unpopular, it’s ideologically braindead, and it’s the hill that the woke left are ready to die on.
