The COVID Diaries, Part 3

A Two-Year Debacle and the Lessons Not Learned

Charlotte, NC — Last December marked a 2-year anniversary since Covid 19 virus escaped from Wuhan, China. The true origins of the virus are unlikely to ever be revealed.   The destruction from the virus — both in lives lost, and in psychological damage, may be compared to the devastation from a major war. In two years, Covid changed society in most profound, and probably irreversible, ways. Covid panic led us to embracing things a civilized society has always vehemently rejected: walking around with your face covered, showing up to work without your pants on, and your employer mandating your health care decisions. Universal masking, remote work and vaccine mandates are likely to stay with us forever. Covid also brought irreversible changes to American politics.

Lesson 1: your government is as useless as your cloth mask

A government cannot effectively mitigate a natural disaster. To see it clearly, all you need to do is look at any previous hurricane response. Even though weather-related calamities are often foreseen days in advance, and their aftermath is fairly predictable, mass chaos still ensues, with the governments’ uncanny ability to mess up even the simplest things. Yet, many people continue to have an unwavering trust that the only thing the government needs to produce an efficient disaster response is a bigger disaster.

It is at best naïve, and at worst suicidal, to believe that a federal government can protect you from an unknown air born virus spreading like wildfire. And despite continuing claims that Trump administration has done the worst job, no country, to date, was able to do any better. While Covid has affected different countries in different ways, most of the differences account for geography, climate, qualify of healthcare, and personal behavior, rather than any policy implemented by the government. Given the severity of Covid, and the complexity of life in US, in retrospect, Trump administration handled Covid quite well. Just to compare — even with the existing Covid vaccine and several approved medications, more people died of Covid since Biden came into office, and virus is still raging out of control.

From the very beginning, Donald Trump was crashed by the negative coverage. First, he did not institute “a national strategy.” Nobody could quite articulate what “national strategy” entailed or how it could be implemented. But “national strategy” had a nice ring to it, when pitched to a scared public by “medical experts” on CNN. Then, Donald Trump did not “set a good example” of personal behavior by not wearing a mask. While very few people take cues from a President as far as personal behavior is concerned, mainstream media still insisted that Trump was personally responsible for killing thousands of people by refusal to publicly wear a mask.

These claims, and many others, turned out to be bogus.   Even though Joe Biden regularly virtue signals by wearing a mask even in most ridiculous situations, we have more Covid victims on his watch than we did under Trump. As far as “national strategy” is concerned, even Joe Biden now admits that the solution is simply not workable.

Lesson 2: “15 days” that never ended

In March of 2020, US government was “flying blind.” No information about the virus was coming in from its country of origin, China. Home grown “experts” were inconsistent and chaotic. And CNN “death ticker” kept rising, spreading mass panic about overflowing hospitals, mass deaths, and upcoming breaking point for the US healthcare system. Fearing the worst, Trump administration introduced “15 days to slow the spread” strategy. While many conservatives since denounced the strategy, at the time it was logical, given so many unknowns. However, by May of 2020, many things became clear, including:

  1. Covid did not pose the same danger to every person alike. People at risk of major complications were the elderly and those with preexisting conditions. Those who were at most danger should have become the focus of mitigation, and all efforts should have been directed at protecting the most vulnerable. Instead, much of the effort was wasted by the “blanket” measures, crippling the economy, and demoralizing the population, with very little to show for it after two years of trying.
  2. Covid did not pose major risk to healthy children. The schools were not the source of Covid spread, and the children were not readily susceptible to, or affected by, the virus. However, the teachers’ unions hijacked Covid, ensuring themselves a yearlong paid vacation while using children as a tool to impose their social agenda.
  3. The devastating economic and social effects of lockdowns far outweighed their effectiveness in restraining the Covid spread.

But most importantly, one thing became clear to the political elite: as long as CNN’s “death ticker” kept running, the American population remained petrified, and thus, easily controlled. If you keep people convinced that an unknown deadly virus comes for you at random and without warning, many people will surrender their rights, freedoms, and firstborn, to make it go away.   Resistance to any government measures became analogous with “killing people.” Panic became “the science,” and questions became “misinformation.” “Following the science” meant obeying the authorities, no questions asked. To this day, people in liberal states cheer on totalitarian restrictions, notwithstanding the fact that they do not fare any better in terms of Covid outcome than the states that didn’t impose them.

Lesson 3: the science does not spell “F-A-U-C-I”

A long-time medical expert who served numerous administrations, Doctor Fauci was an obvious choice to lead the effort to defeat the unknown raging pandemic. Doctor Fauci, however, did not serve the country well. Early on, he was inconsistent in his advice and unclear in his guidance. Later, he became a political tool for the left, often using his influence to disparage President Trump. Doctor Fauci is a skilled political opportunist more than he is a scientist. Completely powerless to take any control of the virus spread, Fauci’s guidance became dependent on a political “wind” rather than any scientific data. Motivated by the media spotlight and financial gain, Doctor Fauci continues to be the face of Covid — or rather, the face of the failure to effectively control it.

Lesson 4: people who push vaccine mandates today would impeach Donald Trump for doing it

Initially, quick development of an effective Covid vaccine was a unifying objective. People of all political persuasions viewed the vaccine as a way to crash the pandemic. The elusive vaccine became “the light at the end of the tunnel” for the exhausted public. However, once Donald Trump’s business genius produced the medical miracle in under a year, the vax immediately became a political weapon. Right off, several prominent Democrats started to undermine it. They immediately reversed their positions when the Biden administration came in: “vaccine hesitancy” turned from healthy skepticism to a form of treason.

In the beginning, data clearly showed that vaccine was working effectively. By spring of 2021, and even the rare “breakthrough cases” resulted in very mild outcomes.

But then, the Delta variant arrived, and the vaccine efficacy started to waver against the more contagious new strain. Right on cue, the government did what it does best in times of crisis: screw up.

The seasonal summer Covid spike and the mutation of the virus in July of 2021 became known as “the rise of Delta.” Instead of giving credence to the seasonal summer uptick and a natural virus mutation (both predictable), the media whipped up Delta, causing the resurgence of mass panic and new restrictions. The promise that vaccine will end Covid did not materialize. Instead, the number of vaccinated required by “the science” to squash the pandemic was increasing with each passing day. We have close to 70% vaccinated in the US today in many states, and Covid is spreading faster than ever; the definition of “fully vaccinated” is becoming a moving target, as well.

Utterly failing to effectively mitigate the Delta spread, the government opted for “the blame game.” With the help of the dishonest media, they shifted the blame for their own failure to use the vaccine effectively to Americans making a personal health care choice. Joe Biden, who said nobody should’ve died if Trump “did his job,” absolved himself from any responsibility because a small number of people are not going along with his program.

It is now abundantly clear that the efficacy of the vaccine is a lot weaker than originally claimed. While providing some level of protection in the first several months, the vaccine has a very short time span, leading to unknown number of “boosters” that have no proven record, no clinical studies, and no end game.   Given that so many of the “vaccine assurances” turned out so wrong, Donald Trump would have been brutalized for failure to deliver if he were still in office. Instead, Biden administration uses the vaccine as a distraction from their failure.

Lesson 5: once again, the war on drugs costs lives

 Doctor Ben Carson:

“Because in order to get an EUA — an emergency use authorization — to pursue the vaccines, you can’t have anything that’s effective as an alternative.”

And so, any research or even discussion about Covid as a treatable illness became taboo. Hydroxychloroquine — a benign and cheap drug that doctors have used for decades — became equivalent with “drinking bleach” and was found to have previously unknown lethal side effects. Ivermectin — another well researched drug prescribed for multiple human maladies — was immediately restricted for animal use only. Any “off label” use of previously known and proven medications was equated with witchcraft.

Even monoclonal antibody therapy, which soon proved to be an effective cure and prevention Covid, became a point of contention, and even now, is being severely restricted by the federal government. Biden administration is continuing to prioritize politics over people’s lives, withholding life saving drugs, and preventing doctors from coming up with an effective drug regiment to treat Covid.

Lesson 6: if you can’t question it, it’s not science

It has been two years since Covid escaped from Wuhan, and for all our troubles, we have not learned much. The most basic questions about Covid have not been answered, because they are not allowed to be asked. How and where did Covid originate? What role do geography and seasons play in spikes and declines? How often does it mutate, and do mutations follow a trend? What is the data to justify mask mandates? What are the psychological effects of mask mandates on children? How long is the immunity provided by the vaccine? Will the currently used vaccine / booster work against a new variant? What is the justification for mandating vaccines for children? Where are the studies on the vaccine safety long term, especially for children and pregnant women? What drugs have been the most effective in treating Covid?

The government have had ample time to produce answers to these questions, and there is no excuse that they have not been answered. But instead of employing scientists to do meaningful research, the government opted for imposing totalitarian measures that have no scientific basis, causing mass panic, mass distrust, and mass casualties. After two years of multiple vaccines and draconian restrictions, we are back where we started — at the mercy of “herd immunity,” and with severe shortage of PCR tests. But instead of taking responsibility for the Covid fiasco, your government is blaming you for letting your toddler out without a mask. Today, your government is no better prepared for the next pandemic than they were for Covid 19. Plan accordingly.
