WASHINGTON — A Canadian vax mandate on truckers that took effect on Saturday is expected to make an already crippled supply chain even worse.
Supply chain problems have been rampant for the last two years which should be expected when governments shut down economies.
Michael Snyder wrote: “From an economic standpoint, an extraordinary amount of lasting damage has been done over the past two years. A seemingly endless list of major problems has thrown thousands upon thousands of critical supply chains into a complete and utter state of chaos, and this has resulted in some very painful shortages. For quite a while, the mainstream media kept insisting that the shortages would soon be gone, but now they are being forced to admit the truth.”
Snyder reported on supermarket experts who are warning grocery stores a facing a “perfect storm” right now and expecting supply chain issues to last several more months. But, as Snyder notes, its probably more likely a matter of years and not months as he wrote: “The years ahead are not going to be pretty, and I would advise you to prepare accordingly.”
With regards to the Canadian mandate, most of the coverage has been focused on the effects it will have on Canada’s supply chain. However, it will of course effect America’s as well, but the American mainstream media continues to be woefully ignorant about the news that actually impacts the American people.
The mandate requires Canadian truckers to be “fully vaccinated,” a definition that is constantly changing, in order to cross the border after trips to America. American truckers will simply be turned away at the border and not allowed to enter.
Although the mandate on Canadian truckers is now in effect, The Conservative Treehouse reports the American portion of the mandate begins this coming Saturday, Jan. 22. It also reported the mandate is expected to impact up to 38,000 loads a day.
Dominic Leblanc, Canada’s intergovernmental affairs minister, wrote off supply chain concerns stating businesses “had adequate time to prepare for this” since the announcement of the mandate on Nov. 30.
Bruce Winder, a retail expert, disagreed saying the mandate is a “major wrench” in the supply chain stating: “I really hope that we’re not at the stage where you see food insecurity, where you’re actually going to grocery stores and there’s nothing on the shelf,” Winder said. “That could be the worst-case scenario.”
The Conservative Treehouse projects it “will take a few days” for the effects of this mandate to be felt.
Dave Earle, president and CEO of the British Columbia Trucking Association, projects two weeks before the effects are felt, according to Global News.
Earle states this mandate could take 800 to 1,000 truckers off the roads, or 10 to 15 percent of truckers who cross the America-Canada border. He believes that shelves remain full, but he expects the impact will largely be seen in higher prices.
“Supply and demand — it’s going to cost more to move a given load,” Earle said. “If your load is a bunch of Apple products coming out of Cupertino (in California) and moving up to the Lower Mainland, having a bill go up significantly on that is a lot different than a bill going up significantly on a load of lettuce.
Sylvain Charlebois, a professor at Dalhousie University, disagreed stating empty shelves could be the real consequences of this mandate.
“This is the first time we see a public health measure impacting our borders’ fluidity since the start of the pandemic,” Charlebois said. “We’ve always believed as long as the border remains open, we should be fine from a food security perspective.”
“There isn’t one aspect of the supply chain that won’t be impacted by this measure, Stephen Laskowski, president of the Canadian Truck Alliance, said.
This action hasn’t come without a fight. Life Site News reported that a “Freedom Convoy” to Ottawa was announced.
The “Freedom Convoy 2022” Go Fund Me page states: “We are taking our fight to the doorsteps of our Federal Government and demanding that they cease all mandates against its people. Small businesses are being destroyed, homes are being destroyed, and people are being mistreated and denied fundamental necessities to survive.”
