Jupiter, FL — According to a report from The Palm Beach Post, five teachers were sent home for not wearing masks to school in Jupiter, Florida at the Limestone Creek Elementary School. The school told the teachers that they had to leave for not following a policy that was set in place by the Palm Beach County School district which requires teachers to wear masks due to the spread of COVID. There is a state law in place that prohibits mandates for children to wear a face covering, but this law does not prohibit mandates for teachers to wear face coverings.
According to the report by The Palm Beach Post, Claudia Shea, the school district spokesperson, said that the teachers were sent home last Thursday, with pay, for their violations. They did not come back to school on Friday or Monday, but Shea did not confirm whether the teachers were paid for those days. The five teachers are now subjected to a personnel investigation and may face disciplinary action for their refusal to follow the policies set in place.
This school in Florida is not the only one in the country that is punishing their employees, and the children’s teachers, for refusing mask mandates. WSOC-TV, out of Charlotte, NC, reported of a teacher, Aurora Preston, who was sent home for refusing to wear a mask that was required by her school district.
Preston teaches at South Johnston High School in Four Oaks, North Carolina. She fought back stating that she had worn a mask the previous school year, but didn’t find them effective in stopping the spread of COVID-19. WRAL reported that she said that she is choosing not to wear a mask due to her own beliefs and that we live in a country where those rights are given.
These are just a few of the stories of teachers facing these punishments for similar issues regardless of the shortage of help from teachers across the country. Schools in 11 states, including California, Illinois, and New York, have had to temporarily shut their doors to the schools because they don’t have enough teachers and other staff to keep things running.
Many districts have even run “substitute teacher sign-up drives” where they offer increased pay, signing bonuses and lesser requirements for applicants. Some districts aren’t even requiring college degrees, at all, for their substitute teachers. The National Educators Association reported that one-in-three teachers are considering quitting or retiring sooner than expected this year.
When teachers are calling in sick, there are not enough substitutes to fill in for them while they’re out. In one San Antonio school, there were so few teachers available that hundreds of students sat around in an auditorium without any education during their school day. It is as if they were only there to complete a required number of school hours rather than being educated and being prepared for when they are graduated and in the world on their own.
Even with this massive shortage of teachers across the country, we see headlines of teachers being removed from their post because they won’t wear a mask. Many teachers are complying with these mandates, even though they may not want to. What happens when these teachers take a stand as well? What will the government funded schools do when they don’t have enough teachers for their students to learn?
Will they end their mandates and put the children’s education at their highest priority or keep demanding teachers to comply with their rules? What will the parents across the nation do when their children are no longer getting a quality education because of these events?
