Charlotte, NC — Since the beginning of our great country, America has declared itself a Christian nation. In many ways, it seems that we are straying away from that in our American society today. We once chose laws and even wrote our constitution based on morals that derived from the Christian faith.
Research done by the Pew Research Center in December of 2021 shows that nearly three-in-ten adults identify themselves with no religion. Only 63 percent say that they identify themselves as a Christian and another 6 percent would say that they are a part of other religions.
The number of those identifying as Christian has gone downhill dramatically while the numbers of those who are of no religion have gone up. This should be alarming to Christians in America today. What are we doing wrong, and what can we do to fix this? These are questions that need to be addressed.
If this country is a country with no religion, where would we get our morality? If there is no greater being who is our creator, then who would be in charge of declaring what morals we should all hold or not? It seems a bit off to believe that there can be morals with no God, or some religion, to set those morals for us, the creation, to follow. Even those who identify with no religion would agree that there needs to be some moral code to set our laws so that we can live in a safe and structured society.
Many misunderstand the true meaning of “separation of Church and State” to mean that the Government should not enforce morality from religion, specifically Christianity. This is not what Thomas Jefferson believed when he wrote a letter to the Danbury Baptist Church in 1802 stating that their religious freedoms would be secured by a separation of Church and State.
Yet, when this statement is used today, it is intended to keep Christian involvement out of politics and in our American society. Instead, what Christians ought to be doing, as their Christian duty given by Jesus himself in the great commission, is trying to fight the moral issues in our society today.
In our country, there are plenty of topics that Christians need to step up and fight against with their own Christian morality. There are things that need to be fought against such as abortion and the right to life, the sanctity of marriage, the structure of the home, sexual education, sex trafficking and abuse, gender pronoun ideology, and the list goes on.
The belief that there is no need for a Christian to be involved in politics, or that a Christian should not be allowed to use their Christian morality to influence political topics, is one of a complete misunderstanding of where our country is heading without the morality that we get from our faith.
This is not to say that Christians need to fight in the political arena in a role of government or even watch the daily news and keep updated with the weekly headlines. Just as mentioned previously, a Christian does have a duty to teach what they have been commanded by God himself as Jesus commands his followers to do in Matthew chapter 28.
If we are teaching the morals that we hold and helping others to see the importance of those morals as well, then we will attack these political and social issues without needing to pay attention to the news.
