Nancy Pelosi wants Americans to believe she has a strategy for ending political gerrymandering. However, anyone who knows Pelosi knows that she is only concerned with gerrymandering now that the majority of state legislatures are Republican. After the 2020 election, the GOP controlled 62 of the 99 state legislatures. Three legislative bodies (New Hampshire’s House and Senate, as well as Alaska’s House) saw a rise.
The legislatures of the states are where congressional districts are drawn up. Pelosi recognizes that this provides the GOP an advantage in redistricting, so she proposes that the federal government take over the process.
Despite her seeming opposition to gerrymandering, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) routed hundreds of thousands of dollars to back former Attorney General Eric Holder’s effort to rewrite electoral districts in ways that favor Democrats.
In late 2020, Pelosi’s leadership PAC, PAC to the Future, donated $300,000 to Holder’s National Democratic Redistricting Committee. This is despite Pelosi’s statement in 2019 that political gerrymandering tactics “threaten the integrity of our democracy.”
Holder’s group hopes to sway the once-in-a-decade redistricting process, which can determine which party controls Congress. According to Politico, the entity will act as a conduit for data and legal resources between the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and state legislatures.
Paul Pelosi, the speaker’s husband, is in charge of PAC to the Future’s finances. In the last two years, the PAC is the only politician-linked political committee that has donated to Holder’s campaign.
“This year, the Democratic Majority passed H.R. 1, the For The People Act, which works to end partisan gerrymandering by requiring all states to establish independent, nonpartisan redistricting commissions to draw open and transparent statewide district maps after each Census,” Pelosi said in 2019. “We will continue to fight partisan gerrymandering, ensure every citizen’s vote counts and oppose any attempt to compromise the integrity of our democracy.”
George Soros is another source of money for Holder’s group. The National Democratic Redistricting Committee received a six-figure payment from the Hungarian-born billionaire’s Democracy PAC, which is mostly supported by his nonprofit network..
Pelosi’s response to gerrymandering (the practice of drawing districts in favor of a political party) is to delegate oversight to the federal government. But what’s in the rest of HR1 – the Democrats’ first bill after stealing the 2020 election — is far worse. We’ve written about this bill several times. It would effectively put a stop to free and fair elections for good. Pelosi is well aware of this..
