Vice President Kamala Harris on Thursday was booed at a March Madness game and mocked online for remarks she gave to her alma mater Howard University after the team’s nearly 30-point loss.
“Until the last minute, you guys did that. You didn’t stop until the last second, and that is so inspiring,” the VP told the just-defeated team in the locker room minutes after the blowout. Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff were introduced on the big screen at the top of the game, to which the crowd’s boos outweighed applause, according to the Associated Press.
After the loss, Harris told the team “you guys are so good, you guys are so good” even though the players “may not be feeling great right now.”
Twitter users responded to clips of her speech by calling it cringy and belittling.
“Why does it always sound like she’s talking to second-graders? So condescending,” former Fox News editor Caleb Parke said.
“Every team that loses should have to listen to this as punishment,” another user tweeted.
Harris graduated from the historically black college in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and economics.
“I mean, here we are in Des Moines. And they are a tough time, they work hard, they are so disciplined and it is a joy to watch them here in March Madness,” Harris said during the game. “So many of us who are here, we love our school.”
