However, the discussion reached a new level last week when Politico reported that Speaker Kevin McCarthy raced to make amends, in part by promising to vote on expungement before the end of September, after publicly suggesting that Trump is not the strongest candidate for the GOP presidential nomination. McCarthy has denied making such a pledge.
