Hours after Axios reported that aides close to President Joe Biden are working to ensure he doesn’t have a public fall again by deploying the short stairs on Air Force One, Biden nearly slipped down the stairs on Tuesday.
Biden arrived in Michigan on Tuesday afternoon to visit the United Auto Workers picket line. The president was caught on video briefly losing his footing as he deboarded Air Force One, despite using the plane’s shorter set of stairs.
Axios reported Tuesday that Biden’s aides are pulling out all the stops to keep the commander in chief standing, following several viral stumbles and falls in recent months.
“Democrats, including some in the administration, are terrified Biden will have a bad fall—with a nightmare scenario of it happening in the weeks before the 2024 election,” according to Axios. “Biden’s team is betting that any mockery he receives over using the shorter Air Force One steps and wearing tennis shoes will be worth it to avoid another public stumble.”
