On Monday, Senator AmyKlobuchar officially ended her campaign for the Democratic nomination. Fox News reports that Klobuchar’s campaign has said she is traveling to Dallas, Texas and will join former Vice President Joe Biden at a rally. She will announce she is endorsing Biden in his bid for President.
Klobuchar’s move comes one day after a rally was shut down in Minnesota by protesters. She is the third candidate in the last week to announce she is withdrawing from the campaign. This follows both Pete Buttigieg and Tom Steyer. Now, the top three candidates are clear. Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden and Mike Bloomberg are all heavyweights in this race and could win the nomination.
Klobuchar’s move also highlights how concerned the establishment is with Bernie Sanders and his front runner status. Various outlets around the country are reporting this and how the establishment wants to stop Sanders. As the article from The Dallas Morning News says, are they too late? A lot will be determined on Tuesday.
Sanders is the clear leader in delegates, leading the former VP Joe Biden by 6 at this point. Sanders is polling very strong in some high delegate states that will vote on Super Tuesday. Specifically, he could take the clear front runner position with how he is polling in California. There are some other delegate rich states, but none quite as strong as California. Texas is a close second and he leads there as well.
Many across the media and the Democratic establishment are excited about Klobuchar and Buttigieg exiting the race. Steyer also helps, but not as much as these two exiting. The problem now is can Biden reach the delegates needed? One Democratic strategist is not so sure.
Mary Anne Marsh, a political analyst and former advisor to John Kerry seems to think Biden will struggle. On Super Tuesday, 1,357 delegates are up for grabs. Sanders leads in both California and Texas, the biggest prizes. If Sanders escapes the day as the leader in delegates, he will most assuredly be the nominee.
This petrified establishment Democrats, as Marsh and Bevan note. The establishment is doing all they can to stop him. This includes getting people like Klobuchar to drop out of the race.
