Charlotte, NC – Coronavirus cases are going to rise across the country as states move to reopen. No, it’s not from the fact that they are simply reopening. That is the story that most would have you to believe. The reasoning goes beyond simply just opening states.
The Hill ran an article that shared how Texas, North Carolina and Arizona were all seeing a rise on coronavirus cases. All three states have made moves to reopen their economy after stay home orders. Some would argue this is a reason to keep the states closed. One of the key points is buried in the article is that some states have not seen a rise in cases, as in the case of Georgia.
There are many reasons that the number of coronavirus cases by state will vary. One such reason is testing. For example, the State of NC DHHS director said that they expected to see cases rise as they were testing more people. This makes sense. The more you test, the more cases you will find.
Contrary to the statements the media makes, testing is available across the country. We are seeing rapid expansion of testing and antibody testing in various settings. This is not the only important data point.
The other missing piece that most people seem to miss is that the stay home orders did not prevent the virus spread. The only way to prevent the virus spread is to be immune or to develop a vaccine. We have not achieved immunity across our population and a vaccine is still months away.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo (D) was shocked that most of the recent spread was among people that remained home. It’s because the stay home orders will not prevent the virus. People still have to go out and obtain essential items. There’s no way to eliminate the spread.
With this information, it’s easy to see that coronavirus cases will increase as we open our economy. Not because the virus is spreading rapidly because of carelessness. It was spreading when everyone was staying at home.
The best thing to do now is to reopen our economy and practice appropriate safety measures. Following the CDC’s guidance of social distancing, wearing masks, and washing hands will help minimize the risks that many will face. At risk populations should also be careful. In no circumstance should we panic or prolong the openings.
