Los Angeles, CA – On Friday, Bill Maher made some interesting remarks during the taping of his show. In his comments, he said that the coronavirus lockdowns were reckless experiments and that they made the George Floyd protests much worse. In this instance, Maher is right.
Maher continued by saying that a quarter of the country was not working and that they had nothing else to do. He’s not exactly right about the unemployment numbers. The most recent data says that just over 13% of Americans are unemployed, but it’s worth a more in-depth look.
I do think that Maher is on to something. People across the country have been trapped in their homes under stay home orders for the past couple of months. While the degree of lockdowns varied, Americans were sick of the lockdowns.
Governors across the country took measures to keep people from participating in most outdoor activities. People were unable to attend their gym, unable to go to the beach, specific parks, or other things that people may enjoy. Those energies they would typically spend elsewhere were built up.
It goes beyond just the part of staying at home. Millions of Americans have had their incomes affected as well. Even if fully employed, many have had reduced hours or pay. Combine staying home with financial tension; it leaves a group of Americans that are eager for some form of release.
We saw a little of this before the George Floyd protests. People were protesting the stay home orders across the country. Many of these protesters were small business owners that were seeing any livelihood they had disappear.
A leader of an anti-police protest unit in San Francisco said that the situation was simply a “powder keg waiting to explode.” The idea behind her comments is that these people have been told they deserve government assistance. Free income, housing, student loan forgiveness, and any other kind of free government assistance you can think of. She called the stimulus check that was received an expletive.
The expectation is that the government should be taking care of everyone so that no one worries. It’s the same story that we’ve heard for the past two years with the progressive Democrats in Congress. Those who believe these lies are frustrated, and yes, it was a powder keg waiting to explode.
The media has pushed the anti-Trump narrative so that everything that happens is Trump’s fault. It’s Trump’s fault that Floyd died. It’s Trump’s fault that they have to protest. They even claim it’s Trump’s fault that they are facing law enforcement to keep the peace.
I typically do not agree with Bill Maher on everything, but in this instance, he is correct. While the death is tragic, it could not have happened at a more perfect time to fuel the fire behind these protests.
