In a NY Times Opinion piece, Joe Biden says that the 1994 assault weapons ban worked. In the article, he vowed that he would reinstate the gun ban and magazine capacity limits. He cited President Trump’s view that “mental illness and hatred pull the trigger, not the gun.”
Unfortunately for Biden, Trumps assessment of the situation is correct. Mental illness and hatred do pull the trigger of these semi-automatic firearms that they like to call assault weapons. In other words, no firearm is capable of action without the involvement of a human. Similarly, no human is capable of shooting someone without a firearm. The two go hand in hand.
Biden cited recent polls that highlight Republican support for assault weapon legislation. In these polls, Republican support for the “assault weapon” ban shows just over 50%. The question that lingers is are these Republicans aware of the false narrative of the “assault weapon.” Are they simply believing the talking points of the media and Democrats?
In the days following the most recent shootings, I was quick to say that I believe there is support for some new gun legislation. I do question the potential limits of an “assault weapon” ban however. Where is the line drawn for what is an “assault weapon” versus a sporting rifle? Is there simply a ban on firearms that appear to be military style or is it a ban on any semi-automatic?
Additional questions surround the matter of pistols. Jay Caruso shared information on Twitter and that pistols are used in most active shooter situations.

The clear answer is not necessarily to just start banning firearms. If you attempt to say semi-automatic firearms, then you must ban pistols as well because they are used more often. In fact, I do not believe there is a clear answer to the problem. The answer cannot be found in gun control or in mental health as either party would suggest.
In the end, the United States does not have a value for human life anymore. America is a selfish nation that does not care about each other as it once did. As a nation, we are too quick to eliminate a life when it gets in our way through abortion. We have states that allow euthanasia as a means to eliminate life. What’s the value of a human life? We have no value assigned to life anymore. Life is simply a choice that is made, not a gift that is given.
