If you recall earlier in the week, I wrote about how the Democrats were going to hold a vote to formalize their impeachment inquiry. This started back in September when Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that Democrats were launching a formal impeachment inquiry into President Trump. Yet, the official inquiry never launched.
Instead, Democrats made the decision to launch closed door investigations into President Trump. Republicans quickly called out the sham investigations. Many Republicans stormed into a closed door meeting, prompting a lot of backlash from the left. So Democrats thought they would be smart and hold a vote on impeachment this week.
Speaker Pelosi announced the vote and reports have indicated that this would come on Thursday of this week. Her statement was that Democrats were going to hold a vote to formalize impeachment procedures into the official inquiry. There’s just one problem, there is no official impeachment inquiry. They are only simply putting guidelines in place for the investigations that they are holding.
You can view the historical document of Clinton’s impeachment inquiry here. As you can see, it’s very clear that the House Judiciary committee was in charge and clear guidelines for the investigations is given regarding what they were looking for and how they were to be conducted. The resolution is clear and concise.
This is not the case for the Democrats resolution. You can view the text of their resolution here. In their resolutions, Democrats include multiple committees and multiple rules regarding the investigations. The interesting part, this resolution does not open a formal impeachment inquiry.
Historically, the Judiciary Committee is responsible for impeachment in the house. Democrats have proven this is not a typical impeachment investigation. They will try to find anything to impeach Trump for as part of this process, hence the involvement of multiple committees as named in the resolution. I fully expect his tax records, personal business information and more to be pulled into this inquiry, even if it is not applicable.
The Democrats are refusing the White House any interaction in the process. As explained here, there are no indications that the White House will have any ability to question witnesses. Both Clinton and Nixon were afforded this opportunity to question witnesses as part of the impeachment probe. Democrats do not feel this is necessary with Trump.
Trump deserves the right to due process, as he has claimed multiple times. Democrats argued for due process for illegal immigrants back in 2018, but will not afford that right to a US citizen that is a sitting President. A US citizen is afforded the right of due process by the 5th amendment to the Constitution. Of course, this would require that the Democrats actually care about the Constitution and know what’s in it.
