I am precisely the average voter the Democrats will target with the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump.
I am not a political pundit and I’m certainly no expert on economics or foreign affairs. To be truthful, I’m not sure I could find the nation of Ukraine with a GPS, much less on a map. But I am a common, run-of-the-mill, average American voter and in this blessed country – my vote matters (at least for now). I generally vote Republican although my political views lean more towards the Libertarian party these days. I have voted for a few Democrats in the past if I thought the Republican candidate was either untrustworthy or unqualified for the position. But if you ask me, I will tell you I consider myself to be a pro-life, pro-2A, anti-commie Conservative. I’m a college graduate, a millennial (unfortunately), and a blue-collar family man who lives in the bluest county of a purple state. And the Democrats need my working-class vote.
The impeachment story we are sold is that President Trump abused his power by withholding financial aide to an ally at war, and then obstructed congress with his demand that no White House staff comply with congressional subpoenas to testify against the administration. On the surface, the story sounds legitimate but the average voter knows that politicians are akin to used car salesmen. Sure, the paint looks good, but does the engine run? Let’s take the metaphor for a test drive.
First, let’s check the brakes. What happens if the Senate finds POTUS guilty and votes to remove him from office? Does the outcome of the trial serve justice to the offense? Do the accusations rise to the level of removal from office? I think no. The US has its greatest economy in 30 years. Unemployment is at an all time low. And the president has deescalated international tensions such that we have avoided at least two wars (that we know of) in the past three years. Again, I’m no expert but that’s a pretty good record. To destabilize the entire nation in the name of the greater good is an oxymoron. We should not willingly drive down unsafe roads if we cannot prevent horrible consequences in the end. Oh and by the way, if you dislike President Trump, then you’ll probably dislike President Pence even more.
Next, let’s check the engine. Does the impeachment trial create enough horsepower to gain bipartisan support from our elected officials? Again, no. The House vote was painfully partisan and it seems the Senate will vote in like fashion. No amount of testimony or documentation will change the minds of at least 44 Senators, so I hope the opinions of 6, who would seek his position, will not determine the fate of the most powerful man on Earth. Average voters like myself recognize a lemon and will walk away from that deal.
Finally, could the average voter buy this story simply because we trust the make and model? Could we buy it on merit? The soul of this trial is that President Trump held up foreign aide that was already appropriated by Congress. But the average voter will ask: why were American tax dollars funding a war on the other side of the globe with the largest nation on Earth? The first rule of war is “Never march on Moscow” but somehow Ukraine is our newest proxy and my yearly standard deduction of 20-something-thousand dollars fuels the tanks that face the Red Army.
Meanwhile in my state, the schools are horrible, there are at least 4 billion unfinished road construction projects, and the energy companies are destroying the environment. Veterans are living under bridges, access to mental healthcare is non-existent, and nursing homes are bursting at the seams. Our service members are STILL dying overseas, our state doesn’t have a budget, and areas devastated by natural disasters still haven’t been rebuilt. Why don’t we impeach a few members of Congress for their maladministration and lack of leadership instead? At the very least, Trump wanted to make sure the money Congress had already wasted was not being taken from private American citizens and laundered to corrupt Ukrainian citizens. Suddenly, the Democrat’s narrative has left the road.
So as you watch the impeachment process unfold over the following days and weeks, remember this: politicians lie. Just like used car salesmen, they need to sell you a story you can believe so they can earn a commission – that is re-election. We are so blessed to live in a nation where our leaders are up for election every few years. If the average voter doesn’t like their current leadership, the average voter can vote them out. Mark the liars. Avoid the lemons. Live free, happy, and blessed.
