Anymore, we listen to consistent posts about how capitalism is a horrible thing. Democratic candidates right and left attack it as “old” and a system that does not benefit. But is that really true? Axios ran an article talking about how people oppose capitalism. I know capitalism is not horrible, but apparently no one else does.
The article was posted by Axios on Sunday and was in support of going away from capitalism. I would agree that capitalism is a big part of the 2020 election this year. You have a distinct choice between socialism and capitalism it seems. The article cites a recent poll where 55% of women support socialism rather than capitalism. In the poll summary, the Axios writer suggests that men support capitalism because it’s a sexist system.
If you look at the things that those surveyed say are part of capitalism, it is easily made up of free stuff in the first few items. Most people simply want free stuff. Yet, some of the other things in the list should be concerning. A state run economy, regulation of private property, government media and communications and government takeover of private business are all listed. Have we really come to the place that nearly a majority of Americans want to live in China?
The article claims that both Republicans and Democrats have moved away from capitalism and to the left in support of socialist causes. That is what got my attention. The support of this point was mostly absent. The article tries to pull in horrible things Trump has done as a support for Republicans moving to the middle, but it doesn’t work. Then we get to the main point of the article to look at.
The writer suggests that capitalism has done more for the rich and has not worked for income inequality. It claims that capitalism has failed most Americans in recent years. But has it? It obviously worked well for a few known Democratic socialists such as Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Both have enjoyed the benefits of a capitalist economy. Sanders made millions off his books while AOC has made thousands now in the public eye as a Representative. Neither may have had that chance if our economy was not a capitalist one.
Then you can take articles, like this one from FEE, that discuss how capitalism has done more to lift people out of poverty than any other system. As that article states, in a capitalist society, the poor live like kings in socialist ones. I would have to agree that capitalism does a lot of great things for the world. It does a lot of great things for our country.
The concerning part of this all is that people are willing to give up their freedoms, in order to get something for free. Are we really willing to give up our private property, businesses, etc in order to get free healthcare, education, housing and a higher wage? As it is now, you are free to start a business, create and innovate or simply find a career and work. You can change jobs, change careers or houses as you wish. This is not the case in the socialist communist economies.
It’s concerning that the American public would be interested in giving up our freedoms in order to receive something for free. I remember growing up and hearing stories about how our society was a “work hard” society. If you work hard, you can achieve your dreams. If you work hard, you can achieve the living wage you desire. As I hear these polls and opinions of socialism, it absolutely frightens me that we are this close to losing those freedoms.
