It is a sad that people simply do not know their government. I’m not talking the political players in the system, but how the system itself is designed and works. A technical word for this is typically civics, but you never hear that word used in our day. Believe it or not, US history and government were once taught in our schools. It’s sad that is no longer the case.
I read this article from Business Insider and could not help but think how sad it was. We really have come to a new low when we have to tell American’s who will become President if Trump were to be impeached. But is it really surprising? After all, socialism is as popular as capitalism among young adults. That’s a new low for our country.
This highlights a failure of our society as a whole. We put so much faith in our public schools to teach children what they need to know, yet they do not know how their own government works. The trust is placed that they will understand how we got to this point, but they are never taught true American history.
Take this post for example. The author argues that if American history was taught in schools, people would understand that Republicans are racists, and have been for some time. It argues that class warfare and poverty are part of American history. All throughout the post, it argues that American history would prove the need for all of the liberal talking points of recent days.
But it does not mention any events of American history that should take precedent. For example, it talks about that people would think differently of Stacy Abrams situation and voter ID laws if they knew American history. I would argue if they knew American history, they might appreciate the fact that Abrams had the ability to run for office and that they have the right to vote.
The left often argues against the electoral college system. This system was designed by the founding fathers to prevent the tyranny of a majority. It’s a system called a republic. Yet, our schools don’t teach this. We hear over and over that we are a democracy. There is a big difference as this article explains. We do not pledge allegiance to a democracy, but “to the Republic for which it stands.”
I’m reminded of a video I saw a few months ago where people at a rally were asked about impeaching Trump. They were all excited until they learned about a possible President Pence and then they opposed that. This shows the state of our country far beyond anything else. There are multiple video’s on YouTube to explain who will be President if Trump were convicted. We have news articles going live to explain it. Why? Because people were never taught this in school to understand how their government works.
The government does not exist merely to give us things we want. For too long we have focused on what the government can do for us. This was never the design and intention of the founding fathers. But not many understand that because they have never been taught the constitution or civics of any sort.
There has to be a renewed focus on teaching true American history. The left will argue this has to be in the form of racism, police brutality, poverty and class division. This drives the focus to a democracy, where the majority will rule by tyranny. If we were to teach history and civics from the focus of freedom, well we just might keep the republic as Benjamin Franklin suggested.
