New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez made headlines again this week. Of course we are use to the freshmen congresswoman making headlines for her senseless ideas and thoughts. This week, she made headlines for her tolerance of opposing views.
This week, AOC settled a lawsuit with former Brooklyn assemblyman Dov Hikind. Hikind sued AOC in July for blocking him on Twitter after he criticized AOC. As part of the settlement, AOC unblocked Hikind and issued an apology for her actions. But this isn’t AOC’s only actions.
At the NY Post, Jon Levine discussed how others have been blocked by AOC on Twitter as well. Ryan Saavedra, from the Daily Wire, is also blocked by AOC after a back and forth exchange. She blocked him once he called her a liar. Liz Wheeler, another conservative from OAN, is blocked after criticizing AOC as well.
Yet, AOC is one that regularly calls for acceptance and tolerance of opposing viewpoints. When she asks for tolerance, she really is not seeking tolerance. She is really looking for silencing opposing viewpoints. Tolerance is understanding that there are opposing viewpoints and beliefs and finding a way to get along.
The left has no interest in getting along with conservatives. AOC is not the only one that is intolerant either. Rep. Ilhan Omar from Minnesota has had issues with blocking people as well.
State Rep. Ilhan Omar blocked me on Twitter a few hours after taking a jab @ reporter @mukhtaryare. @IlhanMN is Omar’s official handle, which she uses 2 communicate w/ the public. So, the left has no issues with blocking conservatives. Yet, they do have issues with conservatives blocking them. Back in July, a federal appeals court ruled that President Trump could not block anyone on Twitter, because he uses it for official business. This will also apply to liberal use on Twitter as well.
So the left, who preaches tolerance, is only tolerant if it applies to their interests. According to the NY Post, AOC has not unblocked all those who were blocked. Does the appeals ruling only apply to President Trump? It shouldn’t, because AOC uses Twitter for dispensing information regularly.
There was a level of tolerance in US politics in the past where we could understand their were different viewpoints. Not everyone sees things the same way. We need to understand the differences so we can work to understand and find common ground. Yet, common ground is the last thing that is found in US politics these days.
