If you haven’t been paying attention or just woke up from a coma, president Trump was acquitted Wednesday on both Obstruction of Congress and Abuse of Power articles of impeachment. The Senate overwhelmingly acquitted the President following a brief trial where the House Impeachment managers did their worst mudslinging yet. Anyone who stood in their sanctimonious way were accused of everything from treason to being complicit in a cover up.
What can best be described as “Three Bad Days in February,” the acquittal of the President is the third strike Democrats have faced in as many days. First, there was the debacle in Des Moines as the Iowa Democratic Party (IDP) rolled out an unproven app that enabled citizens to vote across multiple platforms. It’s safe to say it was an unmitigated disaster. It was so poorly executed MSNBC’s Chis Matthews said the Democrats “can’t even get a three- car funeral organized!”
Second, there is the new pathetic, petulant, and infamous tantrum of Speaker Nancy Pelosi ripping up her copy of the President’s SOTU speech immediately after its conclusion. Third, the end of the impeachment proceedings that occupied the headspace of so many. What stands true throughout this entire process was the resolve of one man.
While many around him typically succumb to “political fever” McConnell plays the long game better than anyone around. Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) recently re-released his memoir entitled The Long Game. An appropriate title, these past few months have shown the steadiness of the Senate Majority leader. The Majority Leader has made a career on patience and waiting. Don’t ever underestimate him as he always has his pulse on the Republican conference, a skill that has served him well over the years and was perfected while serving as the Senate Minority Leader and the Senate Whip.
As his memoir details, the Majority Leader always knows where his conference stands and how they’re going to vote. In his breast pocket, Mitch McConnell has an index card/list with every Senator’s name listed and how they plan to vote. So as the past few weeks unfolded, I’m confident that with every Senate floor speech or interview Leader McConnell gave, that list was with him every step of the way. Throughout the House impeachment process, presentation of findings from the House Manager, and hearing the rebuttals from the President’s defense team, Senator McConnell kept his conference in check. The only defection from the Republicans on acquittal was Senator Mitt Romney. The RINO from Utah voted with the Democrats on the abuse of power article but fell in line on the weak obstruction of Congress.
On the Senator floor Wednesday, the longest-serving US Senate Republican leader and the longest- serving senator from Kentucky gave a beautiful and succinct speech on the events leading us to today. Speaking to a room full of press, McConnell called impeachment a “political loser” and a “colossal political mistake” for Democrats. Despite facing severe pressure from Democrats and seemingly everyone in the media, the Republican conference kept serve and withstood every storm. Essentially, he noted, “It was really about not the president…but about trying to take the Senate.”
Ultimately, this horrendous chapter in our nation’s history is over and we can now move on to more important things—like governing! As McConnell said to a room full of reporters Wednesday, “I think that’s what we’ve just dealt with for three weeks. We’ve listened. We’ve voted. We’ve had a number of internal meetings. It’s time to move on. This decision has been made. The consequences of it in terms of the future are up to the voters of this country to decide who they want to lead the government .”
It’s too soon to know how history will judge what our country has endured the past few months, but what we do know is that a major political party was willing to do anything to regain power. From the Kavanaugh confirmation to Impeachment, it’s clear that divided government at this point in our nation’s history will result in a stalemate the American people don’t deserve.
We don’t know what the 2020 election will hold, but one thing is certain, we cannot do this again. We the people cannot continue to endure this. So as one of Senator McConnell’s favorite old Kentucky saying goes, “there’s no education in the second kick of a mule.”
