Over the weekend, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Bernie Sanders for a rally in New York City. Joined by Michael Moore, AOC gave her support to Bernie Sanders in front of over 20,000 who attended the event. It had been reported through the week that she would be endorsing Sanders.
The endorsement gives the Sanders campaign momentum it needed. Sanders campaign is struggling to connect with voters as Elizabeth Warren’s campaign is surging. While I could probably write an entire article on the Sanders campaign, I want to focus in this article on Rep. AOC.
In her statements, AOC gave credit to Sanders for where the party is today. While her statements are filled with more pointless rhetoric, there was one thing that I find interesting in her comments. At the beginning of her statements, AOC reminded the crowd that she is in the US Congress now. Why would she do that?
Well it’s probably because she has been far from a representative to her constituents. I mean, what has she really done for them? She purposefully ran off an Amazon deal that would have brought 25,000 jobs to NYC. Yes, Amazon could have employed every single person that attended the rally this weekend.
Backlash over this Amazon deal has opened the door for a challenge to AOC. Not simply in a general election, but in a primary as well. The majority of her constituents either did not agree with the Amazon move or are not sure. A Republican challenger was quick to call this out in recent statements following the rally. The challenge may not be in the general election, as I believe this is Democrat territory, but it may be in the primary challenge.
Democrats and media alike are wanting to pain this as an easy win for AOC. The NY Times has an article that discusses how she will be tough to beat. While polls continue to show that her district is still not sold on her. So the logical progression is to sell her on the national stage. Enter Bernie Sanders, where AOC will continue to maintain a high profile through her endorsement and campaigning for Sanders.
Similarly, liberal outlets were quick to capitalize on this. The Guardian has a piece saying that if you like AOC, you should support Bernie Sanders. Yet, what should you do if you do not like AOC? This is the dilemma that those living in AOC’s district now face. She is neglecting her district and her role. She is costing them jobs and money. AOC will work for Bernie, but not for her district.
