Something is happening in the Democratic race. Over the past month, Elizabeth Warren had moved into the front of the discussion regarding the nomination. A lot of folks in the media had crowned Warren as the candidate to beat, but I’m not so sure that’s the case at the moment.
Recent polls have shown Mayor Pete Buttigieg making some moves into a top tier. Many other candidates have fallen to a level that they may not be able to recover from. Andrew Yang, Cory Booker, Kamala Harris and Tulsi Gabbard are hanging on for life. The one candidate that I thought was probably out after his heart procedure was Bernie Sanders.
I may have to go back on my past statements about Bernie Sanders being done, as recent polls show this may not be the case. Two recent polls over at Real Clear Politics show that Bernie is tied or has passed Elizabeth Warren again. Warren has definitely fallen off her front runner status in recent weeks. Some in the media are starting to move behind Sanders, but that’s not all.
Sanders has proven he can fundraise against anyone. He has the larger turnouts among candidates at his events. He is viewed as having been honest regarding Medicare For All, openly stating that taxes will increase.
Bernie’s endorsements from the members of the squad have certainly given him a shot of life. While many would have considered the campaign lost, these endorsements have given him new life. He seems energetic as ever on the campaign trail and has a significant youth following. The squad members will help align many Democrats behind Sanders.
So what is Sanders’ weakness? Sanders lacks appeal to moderate Democrats. He excites the energized base and the socialist communists. How can Sanders get into the moderate camp? Due to his socialist nature, he will need to win a couple early primaries and have a solid pick for VP.
For example, Sanders will not have a chance if he were to pick Elizabeth Warren or Pete Buttigieg to be his running mate. He could, however, be a tough candidate with a Tulsi Gabbard or Kamala Harris. Both give him a significant edge with female voters as well as moderates. Those two demographics will prove key in the 2020 election.
Early primary states show Bernie is very strong. In Iowa it’s essentially a 4 way tie between Sanders, Biden, Warren and Buttigieg. In New Hampshire, he leads by 3 points over his closest competition. He is within striking distance in other early primary states. With the right VP pick, Sanders could be in a great position in the race for 2020.
